Hi,
Does anyone know of a good sample editor for Mac OSX(10.3.9)?
Inexpensive or free is best.
I tried many times to use Audacity, but I could never get it to run on my machine. I may be getting Samplit in the distant future, but until then I need something to use.

What exactly is the problem you're having with Audacity?
And also, what do you expect that sample editor to do?

Audacity wont run on my mac pro either, I tend to use soundtrack pro for any editing.

Audacity 1.2x works but 1.3 up just crashed with a fatal error message on start

There are a lot of sample editors, but samplit isn't one of them... it's here only to automate the sampling process, but i'm not sure every sample will be cut exactly the way you want...

Anyway, it's not free, but i use sample manager, you can do a lot of things with it, and the best feature is batch processing, it's very important when you have a lot of sounds to work on.

And apart from audacity, i don't see any free/open source audio editor for mac os x sorry.

Audacity refuses to run with my Saffire, but it works fine with the build-in audio. Have you tried running it using the build-in audio?

I use Soundtrack for most sample editing and AudioFinder for management and quick tasks.

I am very happy with Wave Editor from Audiofile Engineering.

[Edit]: Oops, just saw that Wave Editor only works with 10.4 and up.

Audacity won't even open. I installed it as directed, for osx10.3.9, but it won't start the app.
I recently bought Vsamp. It's just a sample player without much editing ability. So I needed something to edit the sound first, then bring it into vsamp.
I found something really good that's free for mac or pc, it's called WavePad.
It works great too. Here's the site.

There's also Peak and Peak LE, and DSP Quattro, tho I'm not sure of the sys requirements for those.

Me too! How did I miss WaveEditor? DDP import and export on top of what looks like a great all-around audio editing tool for $79? Wow. No more waiting for the Wavelab Mac version that is allegedly being worked on. I've looked at Rax before, that one is quite nice. Looks like they license a bunch of Izotope technology which is nice, but puzzling at those prices being that I've heard it is expensive to license Izotope technology.

Just wanted to throw a couple more names in the hat. I'm a Peak LE user myself.

AudioFinder - doesn't exactly fall into the audio editor category, but can perform many editor-type functions, and combines nicely with any 'standard' editor.

Amadeus Pro - very simple and powerful, and has a very fast and capable batch processor

fission - This is relatively new, looks limited, haven't used it.

Sound Studio - pretty good app, but limited.

Twisted Wave - never used it

Monkey Tools Library Monkey and Sound Grinder - never used them.

Wave editor looks good, but it's for mac osx10.4 or above...I'm still on 10.3.9. I'm getting a new mac sometime this year, so I'll check it out then.
I can also use the sampler in Live, but it only saves it as a preset to use only in Live6. I want to export it to use in Vsamp. Maybe I can just record the sound and save it as an aif file. The vsamp doesn't loop, unless the sample has a loop. I'm just getting into sampling, but it can be confusing when starting out.

As far as very basic editing (fades/normalizing/etc), is there any disadvantage in using Audacity over other sample editors? I personally don't notice a difference in terms of the resultant file's sound quality, does anyone else?

Any sample editor for Mac OSX?
