hi

got an offer for a Rev.A Receptor for 370$ from a local shop.
on muse I've read the update from Rev. A zu Rev. C is about 400$.

- would u go for it?
- whats the hook with Rev. A?

.. further the shop does not give me a guarantee.
should I be aware of faulty first batches? I'll gonna test the unit, would be vital to know what to check in advance.

I know I would have to face some restrictions with Rev.A. actually, I think it could be a good starter for me, to learn if i like having a hardware vst player; so, I would not plan to upgrade. better get a new Receptor Pro instead.

would not care much about features like faster processor, bigger/faster HD for big vst's. or about uniwire.
compatibility with most vst's and a reliable perfomance would be crucial.

hmmm...

In the New Year there will be a new software release that will allow you to exploit faster SATA drives on your Receptor. However, if you have a Rev A (serial numbers starting in A401) or Rev B Receptor (Serial numbers staring with A402 through A409) then unfortunately, you won't be able to take advantage of this enhancement. In order to take advantage of all that our future software release will offer, you will need to have a Rev C motherboard and processor on your Receptor. So, Muse Research is offering a special, limited-time upgrade offer for owners of Rev A and Rev B Receptors.

sorry for being impatient..

the shop dealer know told me the device in question is a Receptor with serial number 408.xxxx which should be a Rev B device then.

-> 370$ sounds like a terrific offer?

- just have to check if preinstalled plugs work, and if i can install new plugins, I reckon?

- common failures? (reasons why they sell it so cheap?)

it's cheap because it is old technology that is no longer fully supported! The laptop that I am writing this on cost me $1300 when I bought it, and I could probably buy it used for $400 now. Go for it, unless you have the $2300 for a new Receptor 2, or want to do the upgrade deal!

what kind of limitations do I have to face now (v1.7 can be installed?), and what kind of problems will come in near future?
i know the offer is quite cheap. eventually that thing isnt working correctly, i'll have to be cautious (that shop hasnt got the best reputation).

That's a great deal... you can buy that, upgrade it to either a Rev E (RECEPTOR 2) or a Rev F (RECEPTOR 2 PRO / PRO MAX) and save yourself a TON of money...

As for Rev A / B, they have the same processor and RAM. Rev C went to a faster and more efficient processor and faster RAM. Rev E is the single core RECEPTOR 2, and Rev F is the dual core PRO and PRO MAX.

Not sure it would make a whole lot of sense to buy it and then upgrade to a Rev C, although that way you could run V1.8 off of a SATA drive on it...

I'd go for it for sure! If it's a rev B, you have the same receptor as I do. I can run Ivory piano, VB3 Hammond, ZD6 Clavi and MrRay73 Rhodes quite well on 64 sample latency. That's a lot of funky power (I'd prefer it over Nord Electro)! Only the VB3 switches on slow in a snapshot, but this might be solved when the 1.2.2 version becomes available for the Receptor.

got the rev b now.
i amanged with the shop that i can keep it until saturday, and if the device isnt working as i need it, i'll get the money back..

i feel the shop was frustrated with the deivce and i'll now try to find the hook(s) that come with that receptor device. then it will be question if i am able to fix it or live with it.

i'll have to crawl thru all the info i can find, until now:
- patch loading: there seems to be a nasty failure. right now, when loading patches receptor most often just shows '[!!] patch name' which should indicate a cpu overload. sometimes it shorty shows 'restarting' the goes to "MU Patch 128:blank", sometimes it keeps loading forever (i can turn a know to exit the loading process); rarely the patch can be loaded.
- networking: didnt manage to enable crossover networking yet...

just one question by now:

-> is there a faciltiy for a system reset to get receptor back
.. if not i'll start to deinstall all plugins manually (beginning with these that were installed by the shop for demoing and need an usb dongle anyway). maybe there is a software failure...
edit: uninstalling doesnt work (plugin name is still shown..)
if i get this machine working it will be a lot of work

But if you go foe the upgrade, it WILL work. And that is why it was such a good deal. The older machines probably don't have the juice anyway. Go for the upgrade and avoid the issues...

for playing live a well configured laptop may suit better.. at least in terms of weight.
however, i love the idea i can make a SE vst and run it on a dedicated machine.

yeah, the upgrade is appealing - still, for 370$ + ~1300$ its an expensive device. havent decided yet if i keep the revB or give it back on saturday. its a hell of bugs what i got here - trying to solve some issues via direct linux access (still no windows remote access).

btw: to answer my own question about system reset.
With the Receptor on, press and hold MULTI on the front panel and click on the Power button 3 times. Hold MULTI until the message "Loading..." appears. After a few minutes, your list of installed plugins and presets will have be reinitialized.

finally, I returned the unit and got the money back.
there is some pro&contra about it.
contra: i think receptor is a great device, and maybe the day will come when i buy a new receptor - paying more than i would have now.
pro: repairing the receptor i got would have been a troublesome story. speaking with muse techs and a linux expert mate it turned out that very probably the AC is broken and the HD. and cause the AC is emitting spikes of uncontrolled voltages other parts are probably harmed too. my goal to get it working to an extend where i could experience receptor in practice wasnt possible - so i dumped it.
nevertheless the receptor has many excellent aspects, and its imho the only serious plugin hw player out there.
