This is supposed to be a thread about personal opinions, and especially about ideas.

So, the main question is: How could we get a great mix, if we wouldn't have equalisation...

Please post all of your ideas, every talk about panning, about tricks, about special techniques (in a world without EQ), simply any comment is highly appreciated.

So, the main idea behind this thread is,
how should we start a mix (if there wouldn't be EQ),

what would the "mixing plan" be like?

too much bass?, write a simpler part

need to hear the vocals more, arrange for the instruments not to clash
musically, but rather to support the vocals etc.

how does a live symphony or choir
or barber shop quartet exist without
eq, compession, even delays etc

all these things are Written, and Played.

do you think it takes a lot of eq to record a live jazz band?

or classical?

it's frowned upon, because all the good frequency placing stuff
is already there, in the arrangement

Yup. Arrangement. Each instrument's lines need to occupy their own registers.

Take Led Zeppelin. Bass covers the low, guitar plays in the middle, and Robert Plant covers the highs..if the guitar riff is higher, Plant sings in a lower register.

Also, mic placement plays a big roll in the whole thing. Just moving a mic a few inches changes the eq drastically.

Then there's always panning...

Other than meticulous arrangement, I think any substitutes for EQing would be a dismal process with abysmal results.

yup, use the proximity effect, alongside making sure instruments didnt clash while playing.
the usual panorama placement.
using the right sounds at source.
or simply, play it to someone after id played them a really bad example of a mix

Come on guys; isn't it obvious? Just choose the right sounds in the first place. I bet you can make a good sounding track without EQ. There's a lot to be said for panning as well.
