Well, today when I fired up Live, I discovered that my CME UF7 midi keyboard was dead. Nothing at all happens when I move the sliders or press the keys. Same thing in Reason 4. Not sure how long it has been like this. I've been working quite a bit on a song lately, but in the last week or so I might not have used the keyboard at all, only the mouse.

The keyboard is connected to the MIDI interface of me M-Audio Delta1010LT. I can't use the USB cable because CME have not released any drivers for Vista or Windows 7. But it has been working fine over MIDI for several years.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other MIDI instruments or controllers that I can use to test the MIDI interface.

I guess either the MIDI interface must be dead, or the keyboard itself? What do I do next? Maybe try to install WinXP so I can test if the keyboard works via USB?

I went through a similar issue when I used a Logitech Webcam. It required a an hour of google searching and the removal of a few registry keys to fix.

If you haven't done anything like that, check out the free (and excellent) MIDI-OX program; www.MIDIOX.com

You'll be able to see what MIDI ports are available, what's being sent and recv, etc.

OK, so I installed Vista 32-bit alongside Win7 64-bit so I could test the USB functionality of the keyboard.

The keyboard works fine over USB, but even with a clean install of Vista, it will no longer function over MIDI.

Is it possible to "burn out" the midi port on the Delta1010LT, if the dongle is only partially plugged in, for example? Or is it more likely that the MIDI hardware of the UF7 keyboard is damaged?

if you have any other MIDI instruments - plug it direct into one of those to test..? <== i have no time for reading, only writing..!!

If I had to hazard a guess, with CME's less than stellar build quality, I would guess it's the board. Take it to a local music store and have them help you test the MIDI port to see if it's your Delta or the board. That is, if MidiOX shows no MIDI output.

Oh, and check to make sure in the manual that there isn't a USB vs MIDI setting and that it only broadcasts out one and not the other. Several hardware synths do one OR the other, but not both at the same time.

In the end, I guess it was the MIDI interface of the Delta card. I bought a cheap USB Midi interface and the keyboard works fine using it. Not sure why it would fail and I don't know whether it's the card itself or just the breakout cable (which looks intact to me).
