The Whale Drum (aka Tongue / Slit drum) is one of the world's oldest known instruments. Tongue drums are found around the globe in various cultures spreading from Africa, Asia to South America. The drums were originally made from holly piece of wood, which were struck to make tones. It is one of the few instruments considered older the the human voice itself. Tonehammer decided to (re)visit this majestic instrument and deep-sample it once and for all. The end-result is a massive sample library containing over 3.000 samples following our standard 10/10 (10 velocity layers / 10 repetition). We sampled a high-end whale drum in a dry studio environment with mallets and brushes. We sampled its core notes (center based) and the more edgy rims of the drum. We sampled it wet in our epic hall and also made artificial patches from our custom convolution catalogue. We did every humane and inhumane thing with this ancient instrument resulting in the most comprehensive sample set ever done of any tongue based drum.

In addition we also sampled a smaller (baby) whale drum comprehensively and an additional small xylophone, which both compliment the larger whale drum in terms of texture and deep sampling. The library also contains an extra bonus section with delicate ambiences sculpted from original source material of the whale drums.

In the Tonehammer email I got, it's called "Whaledrum 2" and "Whaledrum II", but this post and the site only refer to it as "Whale Drum". In short, maybe an error, but it's a new product and owners of the previous library get a special upgrade price.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the feedback - allow us to clarify.

The original whale drum was one of our first instruments - recorded in our epic hall. However we felt it wasn't completed, so we went back and recorded it deeply (3.300 samples) in a dry studio location with multiple types of mallets and articulations. In addition we sampled other tongue based instruments, while ALSO including the entire old library.

All users of the old library get a price reduction covering all expenses of the previous library - if they want to upgrade.

man you guys are so interesting to watch. the subjects of all your libraries are great, and the demos rock.

my only critique is that all your bundles start at around $200+. it's warranted when you take the price of the individual soundsets, it's just hard to get a customer like myself through the door.

digital purchasing has let us to the micro-payment economy, but for sound libraries i always love getting a mix of different sounds.

another idea is to make a bundle that doesn't include all the patches of each sound. that would help sell the individual libraries better too.

Thanks for being fair, guys!

I bought your 'original' Composer Bundle #1 (pn 167979) on 11/7; I also added the Zitherette, putting the discount elgibility into the '25% off' category...summarily bringing my total expenditure down to $253.50.

Eight full samplesets; ave. cost: < $32.00/set.

The 'Original' Whale Drum was $29.00, but contained *only* 1330 samples....

man, talk about "skimpy"....

So anyway: You just gave me the option to upgrade to the 'New And Improved!' WDII for $30.00 more, matching the difference (retail) between WDI and WDII.

Jumped on it.

I guess that I should complain, because since I bought the original CB#1 only (3) weeks ago, I shouldn't have to lose $7.50 (25% of $30.00) on the upgrade to WDII, vs waiting to buy the whole thing (including WDII) now for $276.00.

For the record: You guys make some SERIOUSLY good samplesets....I should also note that I have your Lakeside Pipe Organ treatment; it is absolutely amazing. Stunning, in fact.

I think that you guys have got the whole sampleset concept right.
