Can someone who owns Independence Basic or Pro tell me what audio formats it can import?
I can't find the info on their site or in the manual.
Yellow Tools Independence. What formats will it import?

you need to purchase the chicken system translator to import other libraries into independence.

Also you can make your own patches from samples, even with the free version.
Even the free version import up to 25 samples (if I remember correctly). If those are named correctly (C1, D1...etc) and put in the root folder.
The automatic system usually put them in the correct place.
Also Chicken System have some free versions of their translator, try it (I personally didn't like it).

Independence itself can only import wav and aif. With the Translator free edition it is possibel to convert SF2 and AKAI S1000. With the commercial edition of Translator you can convert a bunch of other sampler formats to Indie, but I dont know how well t works, since I dont own it. As sorohanro said, the autoimport-features of Indie are quite good,
