Slow patch changes in OSX 10.4

I recently bought Helix and have been having a problem when changing patches.

When I move between patches, the spinning pinwheel appears and it takes five(ish) seconds before the patch name changes and it loads.

Is this normal on OSX 1.4(.7 I think)?
