Right, I was asking about ideas for different ethnic instruments to sample. Right now I've got a side project sampling six Native American flutes, which is going to be really awesome, and then there's the prospect of sampling some Turkish instruments (Saz, Ney, etc.).

There's a Chinese wind instrument a lot like the Thai one you posted, except they're larger and the pipes are vertical. Very cool!

If you're thinking about sampling an asian instrument, I'd love to hear an esraj sample library. I have some extremely mediocre dilruba samples and esraj loops that came with Ethnoworld 4, and I'd love to have an actual, good sample library. I would definitely buy something like that.

Amen for the dilruba! my next favourite instrument after Bansuri (Bamboo flute). It is a violin like Indian isntrument which I think Greg with his slide to any note scripting could really emulate well.
Greg if you ever think of trying it and you need a Dilruba player I have a friend in India whom I use often for my recordings.
btw I would love a slide guitar too

I just got another erhu, which has a much mellower, deeper tone than my other one. I'd love to eventually sample it, but there's so much depth and expression in the instrument, the library would have to be gargantuan.

thats quite a small Khaen, and the only reason its not vertical is because this particular player has tilted it that way, otherwise they're normally vertical too. so I suspect the chinese instrument you mention is pretty much the same thing. especially as the Khaen is not so much thai, as northeastern thai and lao (you wont find it in central or southern thai music, just in music from the areas of thailand bordering laos, which in turn borders southern china).

ive seen absolutely huge khaen in Laos (i think from the Hmong people, not lowland Lao) that have like an extra long tube going from the player's mouth to the reeds.



EDIT: fwiw I'd also be very interested in east and southeast asian instruments.
