Hi to everyone out there in KVR land.

I need some brutally honest advice from all you DSP coders out there.

Basically, I'm a semi-pro coder, with plenty of coding experience in various languages including Java, Basic, Pascal, bit of ASM, bit of C/C++. I consider myself a decent coder and am fine with OO design and coding, but have no experience with DSP stuff and fairly average maths knowledge.

Do you DSP coders (who i respect greatly by the way) think i might be able to give some plugin/synth coding a go? If so, where is a good place to start? I think i've got Dev C++ knocking around somewhere, and got some decent C++ books to help me. ALso, I have Delphi Personal 6 + 7 if they might be any good.

Any help or advice would be massively appreciated. I have used Synthedit, but i don't like that way of doing things. Sure you coders out there know what i'm talking about.

Yes - go for it. I'd start with a simple VST plugin effect - something like a filter. I use Visual C++ - Dev C++ probably can be used, but will be a bit more hassle. You can also do it with Delphi - I think tobybear uses it, so he'd be the best person to offer you advice. Also, check out the archives, as there's lots of bits and pieces of source code which you use.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the positive words. I love programming and love creating music on my computer so to combine the 2 would be brilliant for me.

As regards using Visual C++, I can see why it might be beneficial, but I'm a poor student who can't afford it and I've never got on well with MS development tools. Think it might have to be DevC++ for me. Better start getting some more sleep so i can get my head round some heavy duty C++!

I appreciate the encouragement a lot, so thanks mate, If you're ever in Brighton i'll buy you a pint!
