Hey all,

UPDATE: It would be great if everyone could send an email to urs@u-he.com with the subject "MEL MEET" - meeting will probably be somewhere between Brunswick St and Chapel on Feb 3rd evening.

I think it's about time we do something. We're in the Southern Subburbs from next week till mid of February.

I'll get my wife to come up with some dates, and then we need someone local to organise it. I.e. find a nice location (not too loud, I got trouble understanding Aussies with too much background noise)

We'll be living somewhere down Ferntree Gully Road, a few minutes form the Dandenongs first, but I think I could get my wife to take me anywhere in a triangle Port Melbourne - Mentone - Belgrave. With a bit of persuasion we could probably get up to Brunswick Road (or I could finally learn to drive on the left hand side of the road... but then I can't drink... nah, won't happen)

Who's in? Where shall we do it? First round is on me!

We stayed a couple of nights in Sydney last year. Beautiful place - could become my favourite city. Would love to come back - there's yet so much else to discover... we've never been to Broome nor Darwin for instance.

As it looks now we might either hop to Los Angeles for a week (new born niece there, and cheaper to fly from Melbourne that from Berlin), or take my sister in law and her hubby to Hobart and Strahan (this is a magic place for a 3 night stay).

I have always wanted a real "nerd" as a friend, someone who could say something like this and know what it really means: I always see it the other way round. Apart from some noise and temperature effects, analogue circuits are more precise than digital sound processing because they operate continuous.

An analogue circuit can react on an input signal in a fraction of a millisecond, and much, much faster than the duration of a sample. Many digital implementations need at least 1 sample to react, such as feedback compressors and - you name it - resonant filters.

The thing we've done here has nothing to do with making things more "alive" - under the same conditions you'll still get the very same sound. There's no true element of random here.

What we've done is rather related to making things more precise. We're eliminating the 1 sample time commonly needed for a sample to travel through a filter and back to the input. We do so by predicting the output before its actual calculation. Thereby we manage to get instantaneous feedback, just like in an analogue filter circuit.

That wouldn't be anything new unless we would have kept the plethora of non linear elements within the circuit. "Instantaneous feedback" models have been around for a while, but they commonly use simplified non linearities to ease the prediction. A full blown filter model can have tens of transfer curves. Not only does this make the prediction difficult, it also creates the need for decent oversampling to avoid aliasing (the other curse of digital).

Nevertheless, our predictive algorithm stops its refinement at about 20 bits. For that reason it's paradoxically not as exact as the less precise method (latter is mathematically perfect but sounds less spectacular). If you haven't lost me yet, by making the method more precise we actually added an inaudible noise floor that in turn acts like a random modulation of filter frequency. Which sounds rather natural IMHO.

That said, no, one can't run perfect emulations just yet. Our approach is an approximation, and we cheat at every corner to make it run and sound good.

(In self defense, a perfect emulation would again sound wrong - a spice model of a minimoog filter produces different results than the real hardware)

When i say nerd i mean that in a very positive way, its just someone whos affectionate and knows more than me.

I'm in Central Victoria ( castlemaine ) - so I won't be able to organize anything in the city but count me in, if it's on a weekend, or with enough warning I can probably make it on a week night. I can get the train down to the city so drink/drive isn't a problm

I'm sure you'll get a heap of melbournites here that will be able to help out. But if you feel up to a short trip to the country I can show you around some nice places if you like bush scenery.
