Alien Music

This month you are asked to submit an entry based on this:
Some type of contact with extraterrestrials has been made. The aliens have sent music. Let us hear it.

_____________________________________________________
Submissions MUST follow these rules:

1 - Encoded in either .mp3 (192kbps or lower if fixed rate ... average of 192kbps or lower if VBR) or .ogg format (quality level 6.00 or lower)

2 - A STRICT MAXIMUM of three minutes in length. If it shows up as 3:01 in my player, it's getting the boot.

3 - entered into the contest by posting a DIRECT LINK in this RULES & SUBMISSIONS thread (use the GOSSIP thread for everything else). If you cant provide a direct link, please contact one of the following people listed below, they will be happy to help you out. These people provide free hosting for the purpose of this contest only! They are not a hosting service. When contacting these people, please take the effort to understand the terms and conditions they provide.

Providers:
1 - knockman
2 - watto
3 - slartibartfast

In addition...
Kara at www.kara-moon.com/forum has offered "self service" space. Log into the forum to find out more.

But wait! There's more! If you use SoundCloud to host your entry, you might find this tutorial by kryptonaut helpful. Bear in mind that SoundCloud's free accounts have a limit (per track) of 100 downloads.

4 - Submitted by early a.m. (US Central Time) Wednesday, July 25th, 2012.

5 - Your entry must be composed specifically for this contest.

6 - Your entry must be created using at least some audio plugins, virtual synths, or software studio.

7 - Your entry should have the FILE named in a format of "yearmonth_artistname_tracktitle" (ie "1206_artistname_tracktitle.mp3"), where the artistname is the same as your KVR name. Please do not use spaces and special characters in the filename. I will be booting for improperly named comps (this will not be a DQ, just a little reminder that you didn't tag your comp correctly). Special considerations will be given to those that have the hosting agent change the file name.

8 - If you are going to tag your mp3--and you should--the artist name is to be the same as your KVR name, and the title tag is to be the name of your tune(help us out, okay? it's easier to sift through labelled entries).

9 - One person can participate either with one entry, with one entry and one collaborative effort or with two collaborative efforts.

10 - Every submission has to be tagged with:
a) used instruments (virtual and 'real')
b) players' and singers' names (if other than entrant; collabs are allowed, sometimes encouraged, but they must be credited)
c) origin of loops and samples, if they're not free of copyright (this includes CreativeCommons material; please read and follow the license of the samples and loops you use); naming the origin of copyright free loops is also encouraged, but not mandatory. Please only use samples you are legally entitled to use.
d) name(s) of composer(s) -- if an entry is a cover this should be noted in the file name and/or the mp3 "Title" tag as well as the submission post (not everyone reads the submission posts).

11 - If there are strong doubts about the origin of the composition or parts of it, the participant should have the possibility to send a project file to the moderator, who could give it to a trustworthy person with the right host to examine it. Important: the participant should not be forced to do it.

12 - No resubmissions without permission from the moderator, INCLUDING for time-overage correction. PM me for permission!

13 - Any tracks not adhering to these guidelines will be very naughty indeed. Possibly disqualified upon peer review. And at least mocked for all to point and giggle.

14 - Voting (members must have at least 20 posts to vote ... although contest entrants are exempt from this ruling) will run from the submission deadline until I get out of bed, Wednesday, August 1st. Anyone voting for themselves will find ALL their votes disqualified; any entrants not voting will also be disqualified.

If you have questions, send a private message to D.H. Miltz or ask in the gossip thread.

Whales of Enceladus

Far from being an exobiologist (!), I've imagined the ocean under the ice crust of Enceladus populated by alien whales.

What are they trying to say to us with their mysterious song?

This track has been made on Cubase Studio 4 with:
- u-he Zebra2, ACE
- Alchemy Player
- MAutopan
- TAL Dub II, Magnus Ambience on send
- MUtility (DC blocker), SHEPPi Free Spatial Enhancer, Ferric TDS, TLs_Maximizer on master bus

Free samples from freesound.org, pitch shifted and convolved with keFIR 1.3
- acclivity dolphins (http://www.freesound.org/people/acclivity/sounds/13691/)
- stomachache whale (http://www.freesound.org/people/stomachache/sounds/53266/)

Hope you like it! Wink

Wow, this is amazing. Not five minutes after seeing this contest, I received an actual transmission from an alien named "Xyxxtkd" (that's how he spelled it.) Anyway he sent me some melodies and I did some orchestration and it was fun!

Colab with Xyxxtkd mp3
Colab with Xyxxtkd ogg

I'll be contacting the SETI institute when I get around to it.

Update: Here's the stuff I used!

As many of you know, the inhabitants of Altair 3 happen to have two heads. This makes possible the self harmony singing which is a characteristic of their musical culture. Additionally, not only do they practice overtone singing but also simultaneous undertone singing. This anthem is an old favourite.

The inhabitants of a small, green planet orbiting the twin Beta Centauri suns would often check out the galactic solar wind forecast for some of the neighboring stars, and when they got good reports you'd hear the cry of "Flagrntzzzft cogrnt't'vrn" ("Surf's up!"). Of course, these dudes would immediately throw their ion field boards on top of their VW van (Vector Warp van) and shift into hyper drive to catch the early solar winds. On they way they may smoke some Andromedan 'tobacco' which would put them in the mood to listen to some of their favorite surf music for the short journey. This is an example of what was playing earlier today, from one of the more listened to solar surf guitarists on their planet...

An undisclosed source from S.E.T.I. sent me an encrypted file with a request to try to help him decipher it. He thought there was a musical component to the transmission, and I believe he may be right. I'm hoping some of you out there can help me discover this transmission's meaning.

This transmission was rendered audible with the help of Reaper, ReaSynth, ReaEQ, ReaComp, Loudmax, and some tape noise.

Reporting from NNC

We interrupt this broadcast with an important news announcement. Three days ago an alien mother ship was found orbiting planet Earth. The extraterrestrials are believed to come from Planet X - A planet only visible every 2000 years. Their articulated speech is harsh and unintelligible; syllabified with strong rhythmic accents.

Today, they've mounted their space craft onto the iconic Statue of Liberty. The US military reacted with retaliatory force. Despite their efforts, their attempt was unavailing. The foreign creatures rendered the soldiers into mindless dance drones. Now the virus runs rampant. We advise our viewers to... DANCE... to DANCE... DANCE... We advise our viewers to dance.

FLASH: The people of the world of Funkov have made contact with the International Space Station. They have teleported the captain of the space station aboard their own craft. The ship's inhabitants sent the following musical message while the captain prepared to board their vessel, giving orders to his second. It appears that the seductive groove of their message made refusing their request impossible.

This track was done entirely within Reason 6.5.
Drum loop - Bionic Drum Loops 4
Synth Arp source - Galbanum Synthesism
Bass loop - Baker Bros Funk Session, Vol 2
Dialogue - Loopmasters Movie Dialogue, Vol 3

All loops and samples are properly licensed for use in compositions.

Enjoy!!

Alien folklore: Martian Wedding Song

This is ritual wedding song and dance from the area of Aurorae Sinus. It is a duo performed by the bride and the groom. First there is the groom's call for the bride, he states that the bride's skin is of the deepest shade of green that no other Martian can compare to and promises to vaporize anyone to would challenge his statement. Then, in answer, the bride utters her admiration of the groom's antennae. After short ritual dance, they continue singing simultaneously, describing how together they will invade the Earth and vaporize every earthling. Finally the groom asks, if he can hold the saucer remote control and the bride denies.

rhythm: Battery (mixed selection of samples, including ones by Soniccouture, NI, Waveshaper, Noizedrumz, Puremagnetic, Polyslax, Forgotten Keys); all melodies: Alchemy (because of easy microtuning); hardware: Audiotechnica microphone; processing: IIEQPro, Pro-C, AD Fluid, Voxengo Pristine Space and HarmoniEQ, dB-L.

Sad
I almost dropped out of this one then I recalled the guy down the pub. Surprised
Some time back I met this really old guy and have had a few drinks with him over the years. It turned out, in conversation, that he is actually from another world. Shocked
Many centuries back his planet was destroyed and a group of them travelled to, and settled, here. They have been assimilated into our culture and observed human behaviour. When I told him of this theme he was disappointed as his kind do not do music or arts but he wanted to send a message. I advised him to emulate a notable figure from the world of popular music. This is what he did.

TheWarning
The Warning.
I've been here for seventeen centuries, travelled cross
Nine galaxies and all of their worlds, just to
Find a place to end my days since the land of my
Kind has collided with some other moon.

My people were practical logical beings no
Music or art or poetical thoughts so I
Copied this style from your popular culture to
Send you this warning before its too late.

You're killing yourselves you're choking the world
The rich are too greedy, the poor too needy
The millionaire with his jet and his yacht
The third world dictator has his people shot
You have facebook and twitter and internet fraud
Yet the starving must kneel down and pray to their lord.

When I landed on this world, a-way back in history
The nations were forming their cultural rules but as
Time has progressed you have always been fighting for
Power and riches and the treasure chest.

Do you know what you're doing to your sacred world
Where the powerful few are calling the shots
And the millions of starving just lay down and die
When emissions are burning through the atmosphere
You have facebook and twitter and internet fraud
Yet the starving must kneel down and pray to their lord.

I've stood back and watched your corruption destroy you
Unscrupulous bankers and paedophiles join with
Gunmen and terrorists waging their wars while those
Millions of children don't ever see school

You're killing yourselves you're choking the world
The rich are too greedy, the poor too needy
The millionaire with his jet and his yacht
The third world dictator had his people shot
You have facebook and twitter and internet fraud
Yet the starving must kneel down and pray to their lord.

The President: I address you tonight not as Americans, not as citizens of whatever country you are from, but as Earthlings. The greatest scientific breakthrough of this, or perhaps any century, has just occurred.

First contact has been made.

Not with the type of aliens you've seen in comic books and movies, but with a completely different type of life form, one that is not carbon-based. In 2007, an international team led by V.N. Tsytovich of the General Physics Institute discovered that under certain conditions, particles of inorganic dust can form helical structures that communicate and interact with each other in ways that we used to associate only with organic compounds. Particles in a plasma, essentially the fourth state of matter beyond solid, liquid and gas, can harmonize themselves in electronic pulses as the plasma becomes polarized, resulting in microscopic strands of twisting helical structures.

In a top secret meeting of world leaders we decided to finance an expedition to a nebula in the constellation Orion where, because of a high density of interstellar dust and gas, there seemed to be a great likelihood of inorganic life. It was theorized that because these corkscrew shaped creatures are a combination of waves and particles, the best way to observe them would be to listen to the harmonic vibrations that occur as their structures divide and evolve. To this end we assembled a collection of highly trained engineers to design and build a studio spaceship, with the most cutting edge equipment and plug in effects.

After five years of assembly we needed a captain for this spaceship, so we created a fake song contest on an international music forum called 'KVR Music Cafe' and offered the position to the winner. Unfortunately he declined. As did the second place winner. And the third. But the fourth place winner, named evo2slo, was willing to accept the mission, with the one condition that he could bring along his trusty sidekick, a computer named… Computer.

And now, two weeks later, we have just received a recording from this spaceship. It is only three minutes as that is the longest duration that a mp3 can have and still remain intact after interstellar transmission.

Citizens of the world, it is my honor to play for you all...

Contact

The emissaries are unlike us in so many ways.

They long ago ceased to see themselves as owners of their homeworld, and consider themselves more as custodians of their environment; their guiding principle is to ensure a peaceful and harmonious legacy for their descendants.

Physically, they are an organic lifeform, although they live in an atmosphere rich in chlorine. Oxygen is toxic to them. They have a highly jointed anatomy, with twelve limbs which are used in various configurations depending on the current task. When dancing, they typically use nine limbs as 'legs' and three for gesturing - hence their music is predominantly subdivided into groups of three beats, bars, etc.

The tune they have sent us is a traditional welcoming melody, featuring some sounds from their home planet as well as an invitation to dance with them, and celebrate the diversity of life on our planet and in the universe as a whole.
