should devs offer a preset free version of synths (or fx i guess)
im not knocking anyone who either makes or uses presets, just i personally dont use them, id rather dial in my own sounds for a particular piece then never use them again.
all to often synths are held up while we wait for patch designers to finish banks and i do often wonderr how much of the cost of a synth is to pay for presets im never going to use?
same with sample content, i like to roll my own.

so i guess im also asking should devs provide a cheaper preset free synth for those of us who dont use presets for what ever reason?

Do you still want the ability to store your own presets, or are we talking about a VST with no patch memory?

Definitely! It makes even more sense with samplers. A version of Kontakt without the library but much cheaper would be really nice Smile

Cheers

steelhead when their running and walleye if i get lucky. i'm a big preset slut. i start with a preset close to what i'm looking for and play with it. it's a great way for dev's to serve my inability to program. i've never tried it (i use orion, btw) but i wonder if i could make my own preset then save to fxb and end up with my own bank. i don't personally know how to change an internal bank, tho, and maybe we're not 'supposed' to.
Shit!

Flounder.

But actually, I feel like they should handpick a few to highlight what it's good at, and leave the rest for soundsets.

i tried saving a blank bank (say it three times fast) in refx claw...it saved the same internal bank under the new name, so i guess my method doesn't work....at least on claw. maybe if i initialized each patch in a bank.....

Thumbs Up!

The thing is ... you only need 1 initial patch if you're starting from scratch each time. No need for a whole bank.

thanks, thecontrocenter! i'll probably never actually do that, as i am a preset slut. i kinda view it as a little higher on the ladder than using loops, not to offend any acid users!

Me too ... I've got enough (hardware) synths with no patch memories as it is. I agree with Bronto Scorpio about the need for a good sampler that is just that, rather than a library player.

IMO every synth should come with 1 init patch.. there's no fun otherwise.
Plus that would make synths far more cheaper than coming with however many factory sounds it may have.

It may do people out of money and work i.e sound designers but tuff.. Music is about creativity and fun.. well that's what i think anyways.

SO

Please make all synths in future with NO presets, just 1 init patch Wink

I started out being a programming fiend. Loved it! Still enjoy it. But nowdays, programming takes a back seat to writing/recording/releasing music, so I just don't have time to bother. And when I hired guys that would program for me, they spent too much time dinking and tweaking, so I moved on to presets.

I'll still adjust things, but it is easy to get a preset that is good enough to keep moving the project forward, not lose site of the end result (a finished song) and make it happen.

Nothing against programming or presets, every one's personal needs will differ.

Developers should make whatever is profitable for them.
Giving away a cut version or selling a much cheaper version is good advertising never the less.

I got the free Arturia Moog and enjoy messing about but will mostly likely never SAVE a patch on it. Then I'd have to back it up etc etc
Also have a few free players OPX free, Zebralette etc and again, grab a preset and go... good enough, done.

Just my perspective on this

The first thing i do with a new synth is to delete all the presets (which can be a real time consuming pain if they are hard coded in a list like, Olga for instance). Preset free versions would be most welcome and would hopefully encourage people to actually learn synthesis - after all, that's where all the fun is!
