I there any visual indication of signal overload when using Valhallaroom?

No.

Would a three-stage virtual overload indicator make sense?

Say, green (cool), Amber (caution) and red (lower the input).

I don't think it is needed with VRoom. The gain scaling changes with reverb time, so that the reverb amplitude is pretty well balanced at all decay settings. An overload indicator would also imply input/output gain controls, and I don't want to clutter up the interface.

Thanks for your answer Sean. So I guess it's basically impossible to overload the input(s)?

Well, there's no clipping internally, so any overload would happen outside of the plugin. The plugin was designed to have as close to "unity" gain as a reverb can get, which is why the volume does weird things when you have a long decay and quickly go to a short decay. Other feedback-based reverbs, such as ValhallaShimmer and ValhallaVintageVerb, don't have this sort of normalization.

If you're really concerned about this, you could insert a level meter that comes with your DAW, or get the Klanghelm VU meter, which has level pots to adjust the level to taste, and insert it before VRoom.

Thanks for that info BDeep. That's what I've been doing in Tracktion but was not sure if this was the best way to run with Valhallaroom.

I put a volume/pan filter in front of Valhallaroom.
:D

I'm sure VRoom has at least the same or more headroom than your DAW's mixer. So if you don't clip your internal mixer, then you shouldn't overload VRoom (or any plugin for that matter).

Not sure how it is with DAWs, but I know from digital mixing consoles that the EQ had a much higher headroom than the in and output stages. This is to apply the calculations to the audio. It was almost impossible to clip it internally. My guess is that plugins should work the same.

I believe it's Compyfox who wrote some stuff about gain staging, which is all about setting your levels throughout the chain correctly. I'm not too concerned about that level of detail, but then again, maybe I'm just not professional enough :D
