Hi all,
On this 90s song there is a short string part before the chorus but I can't work out whether it's sampled or a synth string, on the videos I'm unaware if the synths being played are the right ones or just props for the video, I tried to contact the producer (oakenfold) but he's too famous hence I don't get a reply.
This old version you can hear the string clearer as it's not mixed well,

Really hope you can help, I was on here a while ago asking about the bouncy lead synth part of this song being told it was saw waves but I was unable to recreate it successfully, could the whole lot have been done on the jd-800? it is in both videos

I think as a professional sound designer I just want to help you understand that not getting this exact string sound, will not mean your record still won't sound great.
That said, I understand you're on a mission to get this down and this sound is really on a number of late 80's & early 90's synths, they are: Triton, M1, JD 990. These are all synths that started using "Sample & Synthesis" where a rich sample replaced an oscillator but you still had modern subtractive synthesis controls (envelopes, filters, etc).
When you say "yet live the black guy plays it on the korg m1, I have this synth and it doesn't have that string sound" - you're referring to the digital VST i'm assuming? or do you own an m1? there is not a SINGLE string sound on the M1 that doesn't sound like this? I'm shocked.
To me, I think finding the initial string sound is part 1 but there are a number of post FX you'll need to do, to get to the recording. 1.) downsample, the strings sound bitcrushed down to 12bit 2.) EQ, they are playing in the C4 range so you'll get top end but there's have been pushed heavily in the 5k-12k area, shelved at 14k.
