Stepper as sequencer?

What's the formula for using one of the steppers as a sequencer? Is it just trial and error and playing it by ear? factory bank 2 has some amazing ones, but this seems really tedious!

Some Steps are based on the Matrix value of 789. Others on a different value.
Any possibility to use scale values. So we can use different Scales system?
