dark droning ambient in vein of what you could hear in films by David Lynch or in some freaky space (horror) movie.

theoretical phycisists have posed the idea of an 11 dimensional universe, of which 8 are tiny and curled up. theres much debate about wether in such a universe the familiar extended spatial dimensions are curled up too. it makes one wonder if one could apply this circularity also to the time dimension. we’re clueless what happened before the big bang (whish was more like an ambient drone in itself by the way), but string theory predicts that when we go back in time to the moment when the universe was string-sized and then “rewind” even further, then while our familiar concept of distance shrinks more and more below planck-size, another concept of distance, indistinguishable from the familiar one, grows and grows, giving rise to the possibility of a complete pre-big-bang universe.
a universe which collapsed to planck-size, causing the distance-concepts to change roles and give rise to a new universe. a loop. grow and shrink, shrink and grow, the two notions of distance forever being eachothers inverses and every once in a lifetime-of-a-universe passing eachother by to give rise to a new universe, like a cosmic sine-wave. the properties of these universes may differ dramatically in just about every aspect, but the distance-concepts dance their super-symmetrical dance forever. between these moments of distance-equalty when the cosmos is planck-sized, there is room for evolution...

the song “circular evolution” is an artistic representation of this purely theoretical time-loop, and covers one such cycle (to take the sine-metaphore a step further: an amount of time equivalent to pi). it starts with the young universe growing, still devoid of life. then when the mayhem of its first era has subsided, evolution kicks in in places which have coincidentally grown fitted for supporting life. the first simple lifeforms evolve into ever more complex organisms and over time develop intelligence and other benecifial characteristics. to eventually succumb to their inevitable demise caused by their star burning out, their own stupdity or other sensible reason to get extinct (like an alien attack). civilizations emerge, crumble until the big crunch ends it all to make way for a new universe.

That scene where the blonde sees her own body in Mullholland drive, omg, the music was killer..

That'd be Alan R. Splet. Genius behind the sound of many greats like Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Don't Tell Mom, the Babysitter's Dead.

Nice track austere. I often have problems with overtly synthy sounds in this type of music, but I like most of these, particularly the metallic textures towards the end.

I'm gonna watch Eraserhead now

cron, I was refering to Angelo Badalamenti, his stuff is out of this world to me with that choking, claustrophibic style of tension building he has. Austere's track reminded me of Badalamenti's work, & I mean that as a serious compliment.

But I dig ALL of Lynch's soundtracks, so cheers

ps: did you ever see that live stage musical David did around the production of Twin Peaks? f**king awesome stuff, man..I need to track that down again, it's been 12 years easy...god, I'm getting old

Ahh

As far as I understand, Angelo did the more 'musical' material in Lynch's later stuff, and Alan did the spooky sound design and atmospheres in the earlier. His scores are always fantastic. Who could forget the amazing Twin Peaks soundtrack, or the beautiful plaintive guitar figure running throughout The Straight Story, or, hell, pretty much everything he's done for him.

Looking at Allmovie.com, the only time they got to work together was on Blue Velvet. Remembering the amazing juxtaposition of smooth, noirish soundtracking and arse-clenchingly paranoid sound design, it's a real shame we didn't get to hear more from them as a double team.

no, i was not aware of that. not at all!!

It's a weird coincidence that we use the same name & make similair music. But i will soon think up a new name and hopefully i will not find out that there is something with that name already! I used to go under the name Ebullition until i found out that same name is also linked to a well established Punk label...

*sigh* don't have much luck with picking names.

thank you! that is very a nice compliment! I have another ambient song available at http://www.glowfish.tk called "underground river" but I am going to open up a thread for that one in a moment.

I love Lynch's music & films. I am still looking for Earserhead but I recently bought The Elephant man on dvd.

Strangely enough Lynch was not the direct inspiration for this song. I was listening to Vurt's "Totem 24" song and thinking about circularity and then I wanted to transform my thoughts on the matter into sound and hence "circular evolution" erupted into existence.

well lemme just say you made an INSTANT fan out of me, I'll be keeping my eye on your stuff.

just a random thought, but one other soundtrack piece that really stuck in my head for a long time was the opening track for Momento. I picked up that flick like the same week I downloaded the Absynth demo, my first experience with ANY synth, & was just floored by it all. I could say the combination of the two was the real shove to get me into Digital Audio, & I'm having the time of my life messing with all this stuff & hanging with the crew here.

That's the last gushy f**king comment ANYONE will ever hear from me here.

Yeah, I have both twin peaks soundtracks, that's great stuff. I think that broadway concert was caled the concrete jungle, or something like that? It was like a live show of the soundtrack with some of the actors in it, real tripped out shit man.

I remember when I wathced the Mulholland drive movie theer was a scene where the 2 detectives are looking at the wrecked limo, the background music is one of Badalamenti's tracks in Lost Highway.

I felt so ripped off!

Badalamenti is the King of tension music AFAIC..
