Some nostalgia channel was showing a 1958 film noir, Murder By Contract, which I'd seen many years ago. Watching some of it I was reminded of how much the guitar played a key role in the music throughout.
So, let's hear from the KVR film fans as to your favorite uses of the guitar in film themes, incidental music etc. Extra credit if you can name the guitarist who performed on the soundtrack.

According to the Wikipedia page for Perry Botkin, Sr he was a Jazz guitarist and composer and was credited along with his son for composing the soundtrack. It could be presumed that he was also the guitarist, although it doesn't so state.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly definitely needs to be on this list.
I’m going to add one that’s from the guitar family (broadly speaking) that is not guitar, but is played on a zither originally, and later covered on guitar by quite a few artists.
The original from The Third Man is the best version though.

Well, it didn't take long for the late great Alessandro Alessandroni to show up in the thread.
And he was a pretty good whistler, too...Wikipedia wrote:Alessandroni collaborated with his childhood friend Ennio Morricone on a number of soundtracks for Spaghetti westerns. Morricone's orchestration often calls for an unusual combination of instruments, voices, and whistling. Alessandroni's twangy guitar riff is central to the main theme for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Alessandroni can be heard as the whistler on the soundtracks for Sergio Leone's films, including A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, Once Upon a Time in the West, and Pervirella.

For those who like myself might not like the term 'classical guitar' that much, there are always places to the south of the U.S. where usually it's just referred to as the guitar, and sometimes even as the national instrument...

The Criterion edition that came out a few years back I think includes a French television documentary among the extras on the Cooder/Wenders collaboration that might be worth checking out.
Not too many other slide guitar works come to mind but one from somewhat way back was in the rather eclectic soundtrack that a young Luis Bacalov did for Pasolini's 1964 film The Gospel According to St. Matthew (for which I think Bacalov received an Oscar nomination) that included Blind Willie Johnson's Dark Was the Night, Cold Was The Ground.

Looks like the Criterion Channel has that. Another nudge toward finally subscribing (especially since I can't get a library copy of the disc at the moment).

That led to quite a bit of guitar use in that genre not only in films but also in certain television shows that some of us might have once watched.

Composed by Lalo Schifrin and probably played by some member of the Wrecking Crew.
