I'm picking up the Dell Axim X30 (624 mhz!) tommorrow and plan to buy some music apps for it as well. I've been checking out Griff and from what Ive seen it seems to be the best of the bunch. I know about Pocket Jam and Syntrax also. Anyone using any of these apps? recommendations?

Right. Not to sound snobbish, but why would you want to try to make music on a PDA? Why note a notebook which almost as portable and has DAW capabilities. Am I missing something?

Well, it's maybe a big stretch that it's "almost" as portable. I've not yet found the laptop that'll fit in my pocket.

OTOH, it's hard to envision the PDA as being good for much more than use as a voice recorder and maybe capturing melody ideas if you're good enough to write out the notation yourself with reasonable efficiency. There was an article in one of the recording magazines a year or two back (a Christmas issue, IIRC) that discussed PDA software for music making.

I use a laptop as my main DAW. The amount of times Ive brought my laptop anywhere I can count on both hands. I'm gonna buy a PDA regardless of whether I can write music on it or not, so why not make some beats while Im at work (or traveling in south america for two months next year)

BTW, have you actually checked out some of the apps I mentioned? check out this app....there are even optional MDA plug-ins available for it. Looks great as a sketchpad.

thats right...even JMC from FL was talking about making a pocket pc version of FL Studio. A little mini sequencer with a couple plugs and generators. I can actually see it in a couple of years getting to the point where I'll ditch my laptop and buy a cheaper, more powerfull desktop and just use a PDA to work on beats and ideas on my break.

Well, one uses your pocket, the other a saddlebag--a male purse, if you will. Equally portable but one weighs more--about 10 lbs. The PDA is certainly more accessible, but accessible to what?

Me too...that'll be great. My guess is it'll happen within the next two years.

you forgot to mention Core-Sound. Here's a quote from their site.

There's some cool stuff, I must say. How much storage is there on a PDA? I suppose you could use an MP3 player for external storage.

edit: you actually posted while i was so the following is a bit of a useless rant

what a complete load of shite you are talking.

my ipaq fits in my jacket pocket, my laptops don't. on the train in the morning and coming home in the evening i've been having a load of fun with both griff and phoenix. sure they are limited but who cares, its a lot more fun than reading the paper.

i have a desktop daw at home, i have 4 laptops, but my ipaq is the only usable soloution in this particular scenario.

i've got a 400mhz ipaq with 64mb ram and a 512mb sd card for storage which seems to be fine.

and to anyone who hasn't tried them, griff and phoeniz are well worth a go

Why do I get the impression that if something isn't usable for you, it must not be that usable? Sometimes it's nice to be forced to write around limitations. Sometimes it's nice to not have to worry about 'ultimate quality'. Sometimes it's nice to push something well beyond its means. Sometimes its nice to worry about writing music, rather than engineer the crap out of your song, which is certainly what a PDA app is going to do for you.

A good tune is a good tune, no matter what you play it on, how crappy the internal speaker is, or if it's written with an app that runs on your DAW or your PDA.

And I completely agree. PDA is a REAL portable device. A laptop is much more inconvenient. I'm much more likely to carry my GBA in my pocket because I can compared to let's say the Gamecube with an LCD on the top.
