Shiva2 - The next generation

I set out to try and sort the percussion out on Shiva and (naturally) ended up with a quite different feel this time round.

ooh i like this one
the intro is very dark and this continues throughout but not sure about the faster percs to be honest?reckon this mix would sound great with just the ethnic percs

good, i like it now that kick has been dispensed with. it successfully morphs in places, i kind of agree about the faster percussion being too much as it actually steals the initial urgency away replacing it with something alittle too frantic (my whirling dervish days are over it seems )- i guess it just leaves it no place to go from there. still a good listen.

I really quite like the way the faster percussion adds to the music. Unexpected and yes a little frantic but for me this works. It would have been much safer to let the whole thing wallow but the faster beats give it a twist. MAybe more build up though.

I would leave the percussion that starts at 1:00 as the only beat in the track, possibly speeding that up some in places, but I think the trance drums mar the tracks sense of authenticity..everything else is fantastic.

The atmospherics are GREAT! The pads, strings and whatever ooze quality. Very nice.

But the electronic percussions really don't work at all. They all sounds very powerless and dull... I think this would be a great track without the percussions but it really fails rather miserably at the trance factor in my opinion.

What did you use for those pads & stuff?

This tries to address some of Glassbacks comments (on the original thread) and I don't think I can do much more with it without overdoing it and f...ing everything up. If you can lend me your ears one final time ,that would be cool

I love the build-up, when it kicks in, the sitar, the percussion, the feel, the way it moves along...

I don't love... the length
Could easily be longer for me.

Well - I didn't get my mountain of ironing done this morning... ...but I've learnt a lot from this. I realise that you need to analyse and refine things track by track to get everything sitting together properly. I'm usually too impatient but it's worth it in the end.

Maybe I'll make the next one longer.

hate to dogpile on you, but i found the beat kind of obligatory, 'song have beats'? :p if it works for you, it's good :p

i kind of try to avoid giving tips, but it's like. the atmosphere of the track is trippy, and the atmospherics pull this off nicely, so i wonder why it needs a beat.. where the pull/drive is exactly.. memetically..

if it's like 'deeper into trippyness,' mebbe psyche-out the beat a bit, do a 'french filter' on it, or automate some bit reduction so it feels like it's 'comin atcha' like a live animal.

That's cool xoxos. This is not like a serious production - more of a learning exercise. I know what you're saying though and it does sound fine without the beat. My 'mission' on this was to make a song with a beat and I obviously, haven't quite got the hang of it yet.

What ees thees 'French Filter' ? Sounds interesting

I think I know what you mean about the bit reduction but is there any chance of pointing me at an example.

afaik (all the way from tucson, az, usa.. :p) french filter house is ~ that daft punk resonant lowpass introduction fo the rhythm..

eg. your sound is similar to orb's ultraworld.. but with dub, you've got a live mixing board where you can momentarily overdrive the beat for a measure or two for emphasis here, drop out the lows here.. whatever. keeping it breathing..

no links.. there sohuld be loads of bit reduction plugs around.. didn't really mean explicit use f that effect, but same thing.. if you have one with a sampling rate control and a bit depth control and twist them round live, you'll get osme odd sounds.. a touch of stuff like that, just 'some effect' every now and then give the impression that it's living and evolving, pushing forwards..
