Here's a thing I just did. It's work for hire, but I thought I'd give it an airing here and see what y'all think of it.

The Vox and Guitars are live, the bass and (oversimple) drums are programmed.

Drinking to my troubles again

...in case anyone wonders, the "pedal steel" is actually a regular guitar with an Epiphone EZ bender on it...very cool device, that.

The Vox could use some more polish, or at least a harmony part or two in accent points, but all things considered (and judging by what you hinted at for the scope of the project) completely reasonable.

YEEEESSSSS!!!! THANK YOU!!!! I saw a Live Sheryl Crow thing on CMT the other day, and as soon as I saw this guy using one, I thought, "I GOTTA have one!" but I didn't know what it was. I have been looking on Hipshot, but the telecaster palm-controlled b-bender didn't seem to be exactly what I was looking for, and it seemed more expensive than I would have thought.

And here it is!!! What a great coincidence!!

Do you know if they make a non-TOM version, or do I have to have a TOM guitar to use one?

Heh, did you ever hear that old David Allan Coe song (I think it was "You Never Even Called Me By My Name (Perfect Country & Western Song)") where he stops in the middle and starts explaining how someone told him the song wasn't really country because he didn't sing anything about drinkin', trains, Momma and prison...so he goes into a revamped verse with everything at once, something like: "I was drunk, the day I took the train to visit Momma in prison"...truly brilliant.

Ha! First off, this is a character voice...(for differentiation amongst said songs on this soundtrack thingy), and it's one of 8 songs I've had to write and record in the last 14 days...so no polish!

Yeah, I tried the hipshot at Namm. Didn't like it...all that wiggling...

This works great, but it is only for tun-o-matics, which sucks becuause the guitar I have it on is completely wrong for country.

I want to get a guitar specifically for this purpose...I want one single coil in the bridge for basic twang and a bucker in the neck for mellow steel licks...the only thing that comes close is a marauder, but I can't afford one.

I also want to put a roller bridge on whatever I get...

The EZ bender is only about $20, but they're getting hard to find. Keep checking ebay.

Nah. It's my new thang, a crate Vintage Club 50. Greaaat clean tone, seperate reverb on each channel, all tube with 4 12ax7's in the preamp and 4 x EL84's in the poweramp and all for $250 used.

I built a kind of reverse cabinet for recording. (Basically a speaker inside an insulated wooden box with a mic).

Thanks for the info, SM. only $20? Website I saw quoted $79 or something, but it must've been way out of date.

For someone handy enough with making stuff, the concept looks extra-easy, and because I couldn't find what I was looking for, I was already making plans for myself to put one onto a home-made lap steel. That'd make it a lap pedal-steel almost.

One EZ-bender (or clone), one volume pedal, and one lap steel. Should make for a good weekend project. (wink wink)

Regarding the song-- I kinda figured it was a character voice, but I haven't downloaded much of your music in order to make a comparison, so I didn't want to make that assumption. If it's right for the part, then it's right for the part.

It's not bad, but when I get a guitar set up for this, I will be buying a roller bridge. The're all over ebay...
