Hello guys,

I've been looking around for a drum machine with a built in stepsequencer for a while, but i've turned up nothing very good yet. Can you help?

I'm looking for something similar to Micro-tonic, but using samples obviously. A simple step sequencer with a swing knob.

I've used rektors drummachine, but the sequcner has no swing and a crap pattern storage facility, and i'm buggered if i can change it to work how i want!

Any help welcome, thanks.

You should perhaps wait for the upcoming Guru - that should satisfy all your step sequencing needs ever.
Or try out FXpansions DR-008 - while it's step sequencer is somewhat limited, it's really nice though.

maybe this is what you are looking for. It sounds to me like a very intresting Drum VSTi.
I'm waiting for it to be released.

If you like Microtonic, you could use it with a simple sampler, as it is one of the few vst that has midi out.Guru is gonna be 250$.
So I would say the DK+ or microtonic with a sampler would be the best option

I'd also give FL Studio a try. At its core it's a powerful drum sampler and step-sequencer, and it works as a VSTi and via ReWire. Intuitive programming, and it has swing/shuffle.

I agree with MacQ. At $49, FL Studio Express Edition is hard to beat - standalone host, VSTi, DXi, Rewire, x0x-style drum programming. You can use other VSTi/DXi within it as sound generators.

Hell, I think I just talked myself into buying it.

I would go with FL Studio Express, I think that might be my next purchase.

However, check out EnergyXT: Use it as a VSTi with the sampler as your drum machine.
This means that you have a drum sampler or drum machine (if you wanna use a drum synth) with all the power of a sequencer.
Plus you get all the other great things about EnergyXT as well

Are you sure about the express version can be used as a vst/dxi.
On the FL page it is stated it can be used as multi out vst/dxi

I'm assuming that using FL Studio as a VSTi/DXi plug-in is part of its base functionality. On this page it is only stated that the Express Edition does not have multi-out support as a VSTi/DXi/Rewire-client. The higher versions actually show up as two discrete plug-ins in other hosts. The first one only has a stereo pair out. The other has (I believe) 16 stereo pairs out. I'm assuming the Express Edition will only show up as the former.

Bear in mind that with FLStudio, you have to shift your song 1 bar ahead and set the count-in to match.

I have had some success with the count-in set to 0 in some hosts, but in most you get dropped notes etc. if you try and start FL Studio patterns at the very start of the song.

It is awesome drum sequencer though.

The FL Studio rewire client doesn't suffer from this limitation, just so you know.
