Marquis Universal Compressor

Marquis is a "universal" compressor plug-in that incorporates all of Voxengo's DSP advancements and offers smooth compression performance coupled with a harmonic-rich sound, suitable for mixing and mastering.

Marquis features a signal level detector algorithm which creates an open, punchy compressed sound with an impressive transient response. Marquis also offers you a classic feedback (opto) compression mode switchable to a more common feed-forward compression.

Marquis works fine with normal compression levels and for brutal "tape" drum compression. A program-dependent compression release stage can be controlled precisely via special "contour" parameters.

All these features are backed up by a responsive and consistent graphical representation. You may visually control compression function, release contour, key signal filtering EQ curve, level detector, gain reduction and output signal meters.

Voxengo has implemented a new level meter design in Marquis. These level meters are built up from four RMS meters all tuned to different integration times. Such design allows you to evaluate dynamics of the signal and see the constant signal level together with transient signal peaks. Voxengo claim that conventional level meters are unable to deliver such information which by itself is useful when setting up dynamics processing.

Features:

  • Variable knee design.
  • Harmonically enhanced sound.
  • Release contour controls.
  • Key signal filtering.
  • 4-level meters.
  • "A-to-B" comparisons.
  • Factory presets.
  • Mono-to-Stereo, Stereo-to-Stereo processing.
  • All sample rates supported.
  • 64-bit internal precision.
  • Native assembler DSP code.

I just bought Marquis Compressor after trying out the demo version last night (same as the full version but with periodic beeps). I compared it with Kjaerhus Gold Compressor and some freeware ones I had around.

The main attraction for me was the clever metering system which simultaneously shows peak and several average levels to give a visual picture of the input, output, and compression levels. Other visual cues are the knee-shape display and program-dependent release contour.

But what surprised me was the sound! With the same threshold/ratio/attack/release setting and the same knee shape, Marquis sounded much better on a vocal track than the Kjaerhus compressor. The latter emphasized sibilance and "F" sounds in an intrusive way. In fairness, this was the only comparison I made, and perhaps there are other parameters in the Kjaerhus compressor to deal with this.

Last but not least, check out the "Key Filtering" feature. This again is a great visual interface to a side-chain-like capability. For example you can get a very good de-ess effect by dragging up the EQ band around 8 kHz, so that this band has a greater weight when triggering compression.
