It does not sound like an 808 or a 606, but it lies somewhere in the middle as far as sound is concerned. An unlike some of the other drum synth options out there, ErsDrums hats are oscillator based, not noise based like Attack, Microtonic, and others. This to me is a major plus, being a huge fan of the TR-606 hat sound.
I think the interface is very clear with no-nonsense. The GUI is very plain and simple. The controls are clearly labeled.
You get two kicks, two snares, two "blipps" for that short sweepy electro sound, one clap, one clave, one crash, and one closed/open hat. You can route all ten instruments to a master stereo out, ten mono outs, or ten stereo outs. Each sound can have it's own MIDI channel and note numbers, so you can arrange the layout of the instruments across your MIDI keyboard. Some of the sounds also have a "Key Mode" options that let's you play that instrument chromatically. You also get MIDI learn and a nice yet simple preset/bank managing system that let's you copy and paste presets and banks around without having to do some Explorer trickery...
My only complain about ErsDrums is the lack of tom instruments. You could somewhat create something similar using one of the kicks and the "blipp," but it would be so nice to have dedicated tom instruments.
Anyway, ErsDrums is an awesome little instrument. I've been using it since it first came out, and I haven't stopped ever since. |

I've been using ersDrums for half & a year now & I think it's a very good drum synth with some excellent sounds. The kick is deep & thumping & can be easily adjusted, all the basic control are there. The snare is your average electro type snaredrum, basically a short noise with a sine kick underneath it, a little weak but with proper FXs & processing you can get very good sounding snares. The synthetic closed & open hat are not too good in my opinion, not that they are bad, they are the type of hi hats you can find on Casio VL-Tone keyboards, cheap sounding but it can be good if you're into lo-fi type of music.
The GUI is very clear & easy to use, the ability to edit the skin like LazySnake would be a welcome addition.
One of the thing I like about it is that it very low on the cpu, since I use FL Studio I need to load one ersDrums for each drum sounds that I will processed in the FX section, with around 4 ersDrums & 10 VST effects my computer is at (depending on the effects used) 50%, nice! |

I really love ersDrums. At least 90% of my synthesized percussion is made by either ersDrums or Drumatic, and I own Waldorf Attack and a couple of other commercial percussion synths. I can never decide which of these two I like more, but they're very different and really there's no reason to have only one of them!
The basic capabilities and layout are shown in the synth description above. Although each drum sounds different, most of the controls are the same from drum to drum, making it a very straightforward synth. It is nevertheless possible to get hat-like sounds out of the "snare," or kick-like sounds out of the "blip!"
Keying mode is very useful and I wish more drum machines had it.
The sounds are just great! You can get brittle, synthetic sounds if you want, but you can also get classic analogue-type sounds. The kicks can go really deep, the hats are nice and crisp without being fizzy, and the clap sounds pure vintage.
Now as I'm writing this, I see on the ersdrum homepage that the synth has been updated to version 1.0! Going to check it out... |
