Everyone says what were (Steinberg) thinking. I'm thinking what was I thinking. Horrible value for money, the Wizzo kits are nice.

Not being able to easily create your own kit? What was I thinking? Shareware kicks it's ass. Freeware does too. I realize this was about all that was available initially but that's no excuse for the stupid design. What was I thinking when I actually bought this?

Pros: it works, Wizzo kits are worth some of the cost
Cons: terrible value for money, bad design for making new kits, arrogance to charge substatial money for new kits, beaten in quality and ease of use by freeware.

Editing a text file to create kits. Come on, for those of us that bought this we're almost as much to blame as Steinberg. I feel like a chump admitting I bought this plugin.

totally outdated. good 3rd party drumkits, but thats all there is to it. if were really just talking about the plugin itself, then this is hands down the worst drummachine plugin out there.

if you take the wizzoo kits into consideration, ok, you could call the LM 4 a nice sampling CD for a reasonable price. i dont like the sound too much but i guess thats a question of taste.

I'll risk breaking the "This Sucks" rule. This VSTi is a total "POS". When the only positive is that the included 3rd party drum kits are good, you know something is fishy. Buggy, uneditable (is that a word?), unsupported and overpriced. Save your money, get a decent VSTi DM and get the Wizoo kits seperately.

Pro:
+ some good drumkits included
+ further drumkits available

Con:
- creating own drumkits is very complicated
- unflexible
- out of time
- replaced by MarkII - much too late

This was also one of my first VSTi's I bought in Spring 2000. Around this time it was probably the best VSTi drum module available, sample-based with velocity layers.

But time has changed, and now with competitors like DR-008, RmIII, Battery or Attack there is no longer a reason to buy the LM-4, except maybe for the good included Wizoo drumkits and to use other available LM-4 kits (free+commercial).

To create your own drumkits, you have to edit text files and pray that you made no mistake. There are free/shareware kit editors around, but I haven't found them usefull.

Since around Dec/2001 it's no longer available and replaced by the successor LM-4 MarkII which improved some things (but came in my opinion much too late).

I never use it anymore, its not bad, just theres some really great stuff out there now.

yes, the LM-4 now belongs to prehistorical times of soft drum machines. yes, the Wizoo library is nice but for everything else Battery blows this gear away.

I've tried demos of Battery and dr-008, and my LM-4 suddently looks like a toy, but it's easy to use, the wizoo kits are amazing, editing kits are almost impossible, but if you just want some really good drums, the LM-4 will do. There's better alternatives out there for those who want to make their own kits. But for me who's happy with the bundled kits, the LM-4 and Wizoo is the only acustic drums I need. For analoge drums, I use Dynamo's Drumatik.
