FL Studio All Plugins Edition

Reviewed By joeyfivecents [all]

Version reviewed: 12.2 on Windows

Since the last review is from 2 years ago, I thought I'd add my five cents' worth. FL Studio is now on version 12 and has been updated significantly, most notably the modern, slick-looking, vectorial GUI. This new look may seem rather imposing at first glance but, as FL veterans and newcomers alike spend more time with the new FL, they will quickly become comfortable with it. Version 12.2 is the latest stable build but the 12.3 beta promises to add new features such as real-time timestretching. Let's hope Image Line implements this feature as easily as Ableton Live and Reason. Speaking of time and pitch manipulation, that is the only reason I haven't given FL a perfect 10 here. These features have always seemed a bit clunky. However, as with most things FL Studio, once you become more familiar with the workflow, the easier tasks become. You'll find yourself wondering why all the other DAWs don't do things like FL. There are many ways to skin a cat and this metaphor is especially fitting when talking about FL. Image Line gives you so many ways to get the job done that sometimes your choices can become a little overwhelming.

PSP VintageWarmer

This thing really works and is definitely a secret weapon for many bedroom composers and professionals alike. You can overuse it, making everything sound too similar but with the correct amount of tweaking, the Vintage Warmer will take your mixes to that place where everything sounds warm and full. Just like tape. I mean exactly. I A/B'd the Vintage Warmer against some things I had heard done in pro tools and some old CDs that I will never stop listening to and I can honestly say that this plug in truly gives a mix that pro-sounding sheen that is so hard to come by. In applications such as FL Studio, it is best not to start off with the VW in the master channel and work around it. Get your mix exactly how you want it and then add this plug in. You'd be surprised at how much better it can make things sound. Remember to use with discretion though. The presets are mainly just reference points for the user to tweak into more personal or esoteric settings. They do however, have their uses.

CM-303

Version reviewed: 1 on Windows

As usual, Computer Music comes through with another practical plugin and you can't beat the price (it's free with any issue of the magazine). If you live in the U.S. like me, it's an import so it's a little pricey but still well worth it. The CM303 is very similar to the Tau bassline synths as it was made by the same company. It is very usable and fully automatable in most host programs. Every now and then the Q control tends to get stuck in one spot but, as with all new software, this may be a minor bug that I'm sure will be fixed in the future. Basically the CM303 sounds like an old 303, and you know what to use that sound for I hope. Nasty, throbbing, distorted bass stabs!
