da dude, when you were searching, you were searching the forums. Try the link to the instruments, effects, etc. and there is a search in there. You will find hundreds of free synths and effects, and you can narrow it down.
Crystal is a good synth that can do alot for free, by the way. I've also heard that Oatmeal is pretty good.

someone gave two links on the first page - one for all the free vst instruments. one for all the free vst effects.
oatmeal is a free synth. i'm sure you won't be allergic to it. it's purely digital, no real oat stuff involved...

Just go back in time, all is documented. I am sure we can do better than 14 years...
And these are the worst for sure...

it is kind of crazy to think what's available now for free compared to 2006, even just the ex-commercial stuff (surge, poise etc)

There was always a ton of free stuff. It just wasn't quite so easy to access. Even today although you can find 1000s of free plug-ins, it's pretty difficult to keep track of what is still actively maintained or what hasn't changed for 10+ years. There just isn't a whole lot you can do with a simple synthesizer, and anything too complicated (~30 controls?) tends to be too much for the majority of users.
It's really just finer-grained detail like a zoomed-in fractal. There isn't much new or incredible, just a lot more variations of the same stuff over and over. That said, various frameworks and code-bases have become far more mature and powerful along with the published knowledge and resources available out there. Quality has grown at a turtle's pace, but quite steadily albeit slowly - mostly in proportion to processing power.
For an example of something that still isn't widely available: a general purpose drum SEQUENCER plug-in without a built-in synth or sampler. Think in terms of just the sequencing portions of the TR-707 or 909 with MIDI output driven by host sync. I've looked a bit but haven't been able to find even one general purpose sequencer that has the capability I'd want. That's likely because people are satisfied to use their host's sequencers and rely upon built-in functionality specific to each platform and domain.
There are still a TON of different plug-ins that could be created and could become breakthroughs but haven't been.
