What signal does a stepper give?

...and how to do so...

Heya-
I just got a stepper motor working.
What would happen if I plugged a stereo pair into a soundcard and turned it?
hehe 8D
This works beautiful wit HD motors, but, like, it is not necessarily locked to revs,
some approximation is necessary to use it as a rotary encoder.
Cheers!

I tried this-
and yes,
it works.
It's the same as a hd motor signal,
so a sine output.
It's not exactly what I want but maybe I can find something
to flip a software switch.

The different windings of the stepper should output the pulses at different times. I suspect you're just getting a sine because you're turning it too fast.

I see quite a lot of circuits if you search for "stepper as encoder".

Since the windings form filters you're going to be limited to how fast you can accurately use it to detect RPM. For that purpose you'd probably want to use a different sort of detector less frequency-sensitive rather than an inductive circuit.

For example, see hall effect sensors.

Ta man!
I wrote back in a pm.
I got something which looks promising with a hd magnet and a pickup.
I will try some other wires in the stepper sometime,
to look for pulses-
but for now I am looking at this magnet thing.
