At my wits end regarding Midi driver problem - please help !

I recently had to replace my Asus P5B Wifi Delux with identical model (although B-grade stock from Scan as these boards are unavailable new anymore ... B grade = previous faulty board repaired by Asus).

I had one theory that this might be related to the XP "10 midi device limit" problem - so went about deleting a few duplicate registry references (as described on RME website).

However this still hasn't worked !

In fact now my sw1000 Midi In is detected rather unreliably

What else could cause the Midi Out of BCR / BCF USB connection to just disappear !!?

Surely it would be a bizarre motherboard fault to leave one-way USB communication !!

The Midi In appears to work fine

My music work / DAW are now frozen waiting to sort this issue ...

I really hope someone on here could shed some light in this issue.

Incidentally, I did try to restore an old "music" partition image and experiment with that.

At one stage during an attempted BCR/BCF driver installation, I got a rather worrying error message stating:

"Windows System Error
The I/O device reported an I/O error."

However this hasn't happened at any time on my current active "music" OS partition.

That may be the case however after I followed the suggested fix for such problems it sorted me out when my (then new) EMU 1616m wouldn't work due to the fact that many failed attempts to install a Tascam US-122l usb interface had filled up the MIDI device list on my XP machine (each attempt had filled a slot).

I read somewhere that XP had indeed removed the 10 device limit but the release of SP2 had put it back in. This may be true, it may be not - however it isn't going to hurt trying the RME fix (it's also a well documented and well described fix on the SOS forum).

As I said, it sorted out my problem. Give it a go - you have nothing to lose by the sound of it.

have looked further at these midi registry entries - at least 2 of the wdmaud.drv 's refer specifically to behringer so i guess there was room for them !

so i'm even more confused now .....

It's definitely still an issue for some on XP, I've had this problem. My understanding is that it isn't the limit per se that is the problem, it's that XP does a crap job of maintaining the entries. Perhaps as bad as not deleting anything once the table is full. I couldn't get my Roland GI-20 to install correctly on my recent (last year) DAW. Driver installed fine, it just wouldn't show up. It finally works now. The only thing I did was disconnect all the USB devices from the system about a 3 months ago while I cleaned up the area and moved some equipment around. Reconnected them on an as-needed basis, went with one or two main devices. About a month ago, I reconnected the GI-20 and it works fine. Granted, something else may not work when I get around to reconnecting...

I suggest that you remove all USB devices, reboot. Then add this device first, or try to add it to a different USB port, then move on. Possibly reboot between each add to make sure you can tell what works and doesn't, etc...

Another thing you might try (and I might have done this also in the interim): delete any virtual MIDI ports that you don't need. You might have MIDI-OX and Maple MIDI installed. You might also have the virtual MIDI port that Garritan Personal Orchestra installs, etc. You don't need all of them most likely. The Maple ports seem to work just as well as MIDI-OX and you can install / remove what you need / don't need, whereas with MIDI-OX you have to do them all.

Right, I think I might be getting somewhere.

I've tried using the BCR on another PC that's never seen it before.

This time I correctly got the windows hardware installation wizard, and it installed & worked fine !

What I DON'T get on my main DAW is the installation wizard - just a few speech bubbles at bottom right of task bar

e.g. first one says "BCR2000", second one "USB Device" or something like that.

One other difference is that with this working installation, one of the bubbles just before the Hardware Wizard appeared said something like "USB Composite device".

This doesn't come up on my DAW.

So my guess it that somehow I have to get my DAW to bring up the Hardware Wizard when connecting the BCR / BCF units - until then it's never going to work ..

Any ideas as to how I do this ?

I've tried manually deleting the driver files but this hasn't worked - although as I mentioned before, I know at least one of the registry references to midi device wdmaud.drv refers to Behringer devices.

Go into Device Manager and look for anything with a yellow ! or ? next to it. Delete (uninstall) the item. After reboot, the item should be re-recognized and prompt for drivers.

Very simple. Check your USB host in device manager and deactivate the power saving options. Then run msinfo32.exe and check if you have any shared IRQ on the USB host, soundcard, midi devices etc.
