Hi,

I use Tracktion for a couply of years. It's the best DAW-Software I ever saw.
So it will belong part of my DAW as long as possible.

Many of tips from other users helped me to get a top DAW - thanks to all.
Here's my feedback I worked out for a lot of hours, You all know what I meen outerwise You would read this thread.

In short:

Tracktion is not actual. So it is a non-multimedia-applictation in sight of window vista and higher. It is handled from the kernel drivers like a text editor.

Thats in most cases not a problem, because all of You today have very high performant pc's. So the user don't realy gets a manner, whats going on at audio streaming. There are no tools you could use to see the problems. They had to run at minimum 10 times higher then the audio stream itself.

The only tool I know is DPC-Checker, with gives You a glance of the kernel action. But You can't see the cpu-works at the audio datastream.

Microsoft solved the problem with a new service called Multimedia Class Sheduler MMCSS. Read more here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/maga ... ernel.aspx

Newer applications can say for example to the MMCSS-server: "Hello, I'm a professional audio driver, so please, if I sent DCP-Data to my cpu, please tell her that they are VIP's!"
This works very fine and let us hope, nobody uses this to make his application a monster performance. Ok. MS applications will N.E.V.E.R do this.

On our DAW we must take care, that our application work together.
The fastest ASIO-Driver produces buffer underrun, if the audio editor is to slow. And so on...

Now what the deal with tracktion?

Tracktion is'nt able to sent messages to the MMCSS service. So tracktion runs as a normal application. And all the plugins are in the same boat.

If You wonder, why tracktion dosn't work fine and your cpu-usage meter in tracktion is far away from red. I myself wondered month over month. And if there was another application I still had changed.

Tonight I found the reason and fixed all my glitches, drops, hangs, no-working vst-plugins and can use all the fine ASIO drivers didn't work till today.

I can lower the buffer rate down to 128 Bytes and get 7 ms with ECHO FIREWIRE.
I'm very happy!

OK, permissing You havn't other probls like double interrupt, bad services and so on:
Here is for the first all you have to do to get Tracktion run stable under VISTA and all the never Windows:

Tell manually (tracktion can't) the Microsoft Multimedia Class Scheduler, that there is not endless space and time for VIP's, because normal applitions also want to live!

By default the value for not-multimedia-applications (like tracktion :( ) is set to only 20 percent while audio data streaming. This means for a high end pc running tracktion on a Pentium 4 with 500 MHz.

This value seems never change and under windows there is no slider you can adjust it. So you have to go to the registry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\SystemResponsiveness

Default value: 20
Range: 20 ... 79

Change the value from decimal 20% to 79%. I would say: The better your maschine the higher the value. I myself have best results with 79.

Or use this tool to control all Multimedia settings:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Syst ... Tool.shtml

DON'T DO THINGS YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND - YOU SYSTEM MAY CRASH TOTALLY!!

Let work together - have fun!

Somebody translate this please? :)

He is suggesting that leveraging this feature: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... S.85).aspx

will improve functionality in T3 on Vista & Win7.

Post

In a nutshell he's saying: Tracktion is not recognized as a Multimedia app by Vista and Win 7. Using the tool pointed to by UncleAge should make this less of an issue.

I'm not saying I agree with him, 'cause I really have no idea, but that's what I get from reading his post.

This is awesome!!! Just what I've been waiting for. I just love T3 and nothing but nothing is more important to me than getting it to run great. All the fixes are in, T3 is running awesomely - oh, wait, MY ENTIRE SYSTEM IS SCREWED COMPLETELY NOW.

Post

Ive never tried messing with that, would be interesting to see if it makes any difference. I would have though decent ASIO drivers were what you need really. I think hes suggesting that crap drivers may benefit.

That links dead. Somebody please test this with actual benchmarks
(ie. number of VSTs//VSTIs at once before and after)?
OR demonstrate how it fixes some problem in clear english (no offence to the OP, really)

No it isn't - it's working fine here.

As for what the OP was talking about, the MS discription should explain all "The Multimedia Class Scheduler service (MMCSS) enables multimedia applications to ensure that their time-sensitive processing receives prioritized access to CPU resources. This service enables multimedia applications to utilize as much of the CPU as possible without denying CPU resources to lower-priority applications."

So, in a nutshell, you can ensure that Tracktion gets first crack at all the resources available.

Whether or not this solves any Tracktion problems that others are having with Vista/W7, I really can't say as I'm still with XP myself (and expect to be for some time to come - if it ain't broke, I'm not going to try and fix it).

Yeah, it doesn't really mean anything without benchmarks.

Link didn't work cause I cut-pasted (the abridged link expands to the full link anyway)

Hi,

sorry for bad english, but that's not important. We could speak german otherwise.

Please, try out changing this value. You can optimize the cooperation between new designed VISTA-applications like the latest ASIO drivers, soundcard drivers and on the other hand older XP-optimized applications like Tracktion, many VST and VSTi.

Nothing can brake if you only try out this value between the given area 20 ... 79!

Try out things that didn't work before and post the results.

For example:
1. Since setting this value to 79, I can synchronice my harddisc recorder (TASCAM 788) via MIDI without any problems. That din't work ever before!

2. Since setting this value to 79, I can use the newest ASIO drivers from my ECHO AUDIO 2 firewire interface. That crashed before.

Have fun and try out. And please let us know!

1. Press Windows key and R simultaneously.

2. Enter "regedit" (without the quotation marks) and press enter.

3. Using the tree on your left, navigate to the following branch:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ Multimedia\SystemProfile

4. Double click on "SystemResponsiveness".

Default value: 20
Range: 20 ... 79

5. The value should be 20 decimal by default.

6. Enter 79 with base decimal if you have a fast PC,
Try out lower values if that is too hard.
(Your latest ASIO Interface shows buffer overruns for example.)

7. Click Ok and restart your computer.

Important:
- If nothing appears, make sure the value isn't reseted by another application!

Hi diemoories - glad to hear it's solved some problems for you-
have you tested it out to see whether you can get more vst/vsti's before/after applying the setting?
Cheers,
Matt
