Which one of the Discovery synths is closest in architecture to the Nord Lead 2x?
(ie, no additional bells and whistles & no less obviously)

The third option is to do both. The 2x works as controller for the Discovery plugin (the knobs on the 2x maps to the parameters of the plugin) making IMO more than the sum of the parts. The best of two worlds and then some.

Or to put it this way: i'm not that interested in the Discovery. It's a good synth no doubt but on it's own it's not that special.

I'm not that interested in a NL2. It's a good synth no doubt but on it's own it's not that special. Plus the hassle of hardware,midi, audio recording instead of rendering, lack of voices etc.

However i would love to have both. Awesome combo in my book.

I've done all that and IMO it's a pain in the neck. VSTs boom! one mouse click and they're there. The downside being that they're not hands on. Editing sounds on NL2 is so much more rewarding than on a plugin. That's why it's such an awesome combo. You get the best of two worlds.

Even the fact that the Discovery doesn't sound exactly like NL2 isn't something to be bothered about. It's a plus in my book. Then you have 2 slightly different flavours of synths,what's not to like.

As a sidenote the NL2 would also make a great controller for Synth1 me thinks.

I fired up my NL3 and was pleasently suprised by the clarity, richness and subtle complexity of the timbres I don't hear in my arsenal of vsti. Plus it makes an amazing controller.

For quite some time I was working with serious NL(2/2X/Rack) guys on a Synth1 NL converter. Synth1 is 99% NL2, just for the record... Try to convert some syx patches and listen. Try to do it also with Discovery. Well, most of the NL users can't tell the difference between Synth1 and NL. With Discovery, the difference is obvious.
In fact, the Synth1 works so well as soft replacement, that many of NL owners asked me to make Synth1 to NL converter! No way of course, this cannot be done because Synth1 is much more complex synth.
Anyway, try Synth1, you won't regret it

It's funny to read about how CPU heavy Discovery was 9 years ago. Almost feels like Urs with Diva right now

Well, most of the NL users can't tell the difference between Synth1 and NL. With Discovery, the difference is obvious.

I'm reluctant about that.

Well, I demoed discovery just last week. Some of the patches ate 25-35% on my 2500k @ 3.8ghz. So, yes, I think it is still quite cpu heavy..

Are you sure it's not the Pro version?
