One-Synth-Challenge 40: Augur - Voting and Results

Hi Folks,

Great selection as usual, hard to pick winners, here goes...


5 Points : evo2slo - Animated Dust (Definite winner for me, lovely melodic hooks u got in there and some excellent dynamic build ups on top of catchy chord progressions, sticks some guitars & vox on there & u got a hit

4 Points : Doc Jon - The Long Journey Home (wicked track throughout, intro reminds me of that Simon & Garfunkel tune, 'I'd rather be a hammer than a nail', for a split second anyway.. tee hee then that 80s gothy style guitar riff & some synth brass for good measure very well done)

3 Points : AdagioCm - Augur's Inauguration Auspices (Those 70s vintage synth style sounds, i love 'em)

2 Points : Pulse Width Modulation - Breaking the Bounds of Earth (excellent, love the fast filter type pad that comes in midway, nice atmosphere throughout)

1 Points : Irion Da Ronin - Crystalline Waters (great atmosphere created, brings to mind Sakamoto stuff)

Hehe, believe me, V'ger won't say yes, we already talked about this a few times before in the main thread.
Once, we got more than 40 tracks, an OSC record, and still we had to choose only 5 tracks from those.
So say thanks that this month were only 26 tracks, haha. That day was really difficult to vote.


Thanks for the votes and comments so far guys, i'm very grateful about it.

I narrowed down tracks to about 10. So tomorrow i will make my votes in the evening.
It will be tight anyway. This month there are nice experimental stuff, that i like, risky tracks, amazing electronic tracks.

Hi guys, firstly thanks for the comments and points this month.

Amazing amount of experimental tracks this month.
As usual, i'm looking more for touchy feelings than quality, so...
You know how difficult is to narrowing down 25 tracks into 5, but there goes.

My champions this month

1) - Pulse Width Modulation - Breaking the Bounds of Earth - 5 points
Simply precious, full of hope and feeling. Overall great quality and composition also. But the best part is when starts growing up from 2:06 minutes, that's touchy and dreamy.
My 5 points for you. This track goes to my playlist. Keep up the good work and cheers.

2) - Cactoos - Edification - 4 points
Another great track, when i was listening it i felt like if i were watching myself in a mirror, the style is very alike to mine, only it is better i think. It could be the number 5, but i heard a LOFI effect in the beat, so 4th place for this great track. Keep up the good work, cheers.

3) - SuperNoise - Nostalgia - 3 points
I just hate you, these glass leads sounds and plucky ones were in my head since i listened the track, i was wondering from where they came, until i was listening the track this evening for making my votes...

4) - Yeager - No Room For Space - 2 points
Amazing beginning with these arps, as usual a nice videogamish track from Yeager, full of energy which teleport me to old times when i was a vicious player. Don't stop making this style and cheers.

5) - Photonic - Levitation - 1 point
A great moody track with nice use of sounds. It is tender, it is soft and very felt. I like it so much. Nice change and leads in the middle of the track. In my playlist. Keep the good work man, you are doing so well. Cheers.

I agree with everyone else that it is rather hard to come up with only five tracks, but here are my selections:

5 points: Cactoos - Edification
Awesome progressions, incredible sound design, a trip back through time and space. Not to get too over-the-top. A few sounds here and there sound like they suffered a little bit from cheap (okay, well, free) filter problems, then again it ties the very 80's and 90's vibe of the track into the modern era of ubiquitous cheap digital synths. And overall the effect works very well.

4 points: Adagiocm - Augur's Inauguration Auspices
I love the way things sit in the mix, although parts of it could possibly use a little more clarity, or more tidying up some of the upper-low to lower-mid frequencies. At times the bass gets a little out of hand. I like the reprise at the end by the Augur's Dream voices. And the composition in general, obviously.

3 points: Pulse Width Modulation - Breaking the Bounds of Earth
I love the sound in the opening, a synth manufacturer could have sold thousands of units just by demoing that alone. And justifiably so. Rivals anything that comes out of a Korg Wavestation, with 1/4 the synth resources; very impressive. Also the part where you're flipping through the wavetable, or simulating the wave sequencing effect, is cool. I feel like the song starts to drag a little bit halfway through, but the distorted-guitar-type lead comes in and adds quite a lot. Then at about 4:12 the atmosphere really puts an end to any monotony from earlier.

2 points: Yeager - No Room for Space
Great mix of voices, each one really cuts through and the mix is super punchy. I love the 'big'-ness of the sound. My main criticism has to be the repetitive resonant almost digital synthetic rain-stick type effect in the background throughout the track. I found it distracting in its excess. Maybe it's just the way it comes through my particular speaker setup, idk.

1 point: Bumtu - Damaged Radio Workshop
Very unique, but very well done - I wouldn't be surprised hearing this in the background of a video game, used to set the mood of a certain environment. Suffers from repetition, but then again, that's part of what makes the track what it is, and as that type of track, it's not a weakness at all.

There were a lot of other tracks with fantastic composition, sound design, innovation, etc, but I just look at this with a Simon-Cowell-hat on to narrow things down, before taking it off to be nice again. Not that I feel my opinion actually carries that kind of weight, or is nearly as well informed as that of Simon Cowell.

First of all, thanks for the comment and the points, and secondly it has nothing to do with your setup.
I listened to it again (focusing on that particular sound) and it's the most annoying repetitive sound I've ever heard You are absolutely right !
I simply overdid it and it's horrible once it draws attention.(You almost can't hear anything else, you're just waiting for it to come again and again and again....) time for a re-mix!

1. Pulse Width Modulation - Breaking the Bounds of Earth - 5 points
Incredible sounds… but it's what you do with them that makes this track so special. Wonderfully patient intro, then a great progression and excellent playing in the middle section. The extended outro makes for a great bookend to a heavy shelf of musical wisdom.

2. Irion Da Ronin - Crystalline Waters - 4 points
(great cover art!) That deep sub-bass lays down a perfect foundation for the other musical elements. Amazing sound design throughout - underwater light and shadows dancing around my head. The calm arrangement takes it's time hurrying nowhere, and yet arriving everywhere.

3. R0z - Augur'L 'U Got Me Groovin' - 3 points
Fantastic drums and that bass groove is crazy good. Pads and keys are also well done and seem to stay out of the way when they should (but thankfully that's not too often). Loved 'The Augural Automatons' as well - but this one beat it out.

4. Photonic - Levitation - 2 points
Breathtaking melodies. The warm and brassy instrumentation works really well with the composition. A very well crafted piece, but with great emotional content.

5. jackoo - Banjo Schizophrenia - 1 point
Clever, unique, humorous, and well executed. I've got to get me one of those midi banjos!

About this compo, i noticed that i prefer digital synths and hybrid ones than just analogs.
Dunno exactly why yet, maybe is the fact that analogs all sounds almost the same, they are difficult to equalize in the mix, etc...
