...that's not going to make the audio show up in the screen capture. I thnk I'll just record no audio video and record the master channel's output with VST insert and then I'll mix it together in MS Video maker or something basic like that. Seems to be the only option at this point without shelling out for a hardware mixer and running silly driver configs... chers guys. I'll just keave it at that and do it the hard way.

Doesn't seem that it does actually: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5233013
Sorry, my bet...it totally went under my radar that they've thrown couple of new "Scarlettes" into the market. But I can tell the 8i6 (which I own) definately has loopback.

Post

There are however a few other that have loopback as well

Google search: usb audio interface with loopback

The Roland one is the most affordable i think.

If this is something you want to do a lot of (and it really can be a great promo tool) then I would suggest maybe buying a cheap Mac Mini. This is one of those cases where you can buy Screenflow and it will 'just work'.

It's what I'll be doing soon for the same reason.

@Orchidius Thanks for the link mate. I was actually stumped as to what would be a good search term to use. That'll do nicely, so I'll scour the results and see what i come up with ;)

@tehlord Funny you should mention that. I was actually thinking the same thing today at work while day dreaming... could be another way to do it if the Roland thing doesn't pan out.

You can actually do that with Virtual Audio Stream but only if you don't use the ASIO driver in your DAW. Set your DAW output to e.g. the VAS stream 1 using Direct Sound or Windows Sound, and in V.A.S., set stream 1 as input and your default soundcard as output. In V.A.S. you'd then need a recording VST plugin to record the whole thing....

Just wanted to add to this conversation in regards to the "What U Hear" bit that ultimately might help you out. I was trying to do this with a SoundBlaster XFi Gamer card on Windows 7, and it just wasn't working when I tried to record into Audacity. Once I dug into the Sound control panel, made it my Default Device, THEN went under Properties then Levels, which was set at ZERO!!!! and turned it up, THEN it started to work. Make sure you check this, as it set me back a few hours until I finally stumbled on this solution (along with help from whyterabbyt that got me on the right track.)

What screen capture software are you actually using ?

Because I had the same problem (using the Roland UA-55) recently, as I did not find a way to set up the internal channels (although there are four of them) for exactly the same purpose (making a video, listening to host output and my recorded microphone input in real-time while recording at the same time).

But miracoulously the Screen capturing software solved the problem for me without any hassle (I use HyperCam, fairly low budget for non-commercial use ($ 40)). Without me doing any meddling with the internal routing either in the Roland driver setup or in the Windows audio setup everything was captured and could be listened to at the same time. And I don't think that it's got something to do with the two extra channels that the UA-55 offers compared with the UA-25 (because there's no such thing mentioned in the system requirements for the HyperCam software). It's probably worth a try, the software is affordable and there's a demo version. Hope that helps.

@DevonB As noted earlier, a lot of the creative cards still support this in Win7, and yes, the way you described is how it's activated. My UA-25 is my default sound device as I don't use the onboard soundcard thingy at all (realtek 5.1 jibba jabba, crappy). This does however not work with a UA-25 due to driver limitations (found a thread on the Roland / Edirol support forum :|).

@streifentier Like I say, it's driver specific. Your driver may be more elaborate than the UA-25 one. The UA25 driver configuration is VERY basic, with settings for latency, light midi load, special ASIO (smaller buffer) and ASIO direct monitor. Regardless, I've tried all possible setting (like I say, I've been trying to solve this issue for a VERY long time). As for capturing software, I use Hypercam as well. You still have to pic you audio source, and there's no option to select the UA-25 output... the options I have available to select is "default playback device" (records no output as I'm not using the onboard soundcard, can't plug my mic into it, and it sounds crap), UA-25 in (mic in, ONLY the mic) and the onboard soundcard's mic / line.

EDIT: also tried clever things with ASIO4ALL... the UA25 and ASIO4ALL does not play well together... long story (in anyway, it still doesn't give you an option in the cam software to record the UA25 output, so have not bothered to pursue that further).

The UA-25 might be recording stereo from the inputs. Without ASIO, it could default to two channels and that's it. You can still do what I described before, and record the DAW output from 3 or 4 then into input 2, making a dual mono recording of mic and DAW. Unless there are other issues?

Post

The issue is, I can record the UA 25 mic output, and just one mic output, not the summed output (so mic + DAW). This is where the whole problem stems from. I though about running an external desk, running the UA25 output into the desk, plugging the mic into the mixer directly, and recording the whole shebang through the mic input with direct monitoring off (thereby avoiding a feedback loop), but that entails spending cash on a mixer (albeit) that will only be used for that, and plugging in and unplugging cables on a regular basis is something I'm trying to avoid (as far as my experience that's the best way to stuff up a mixer or an interface).

Understood. I mainly posted that in hopes that some lucky Googling/Forum searches will land someone else some day on the right way to get What U Hear to work. I've gotten email/messages YEARS later thanking me for posting a solution to a problem someone couldn't figure out.

Still at this if you don't believe. Nerves! Wondering now if I shouldn't just buy a Tascam US322.

http://midithru.net/Home/AsioLink- maybe this will help? It's $20, can route all Windows audio into DAW while using any ASIO card, or out of daw then into any Windows app.
