changing the tempo in tracktion

i downloaded the tracktion 2 demo. I put a drum audio file on a track & tried to change the tempo. i would change the tempo & tracktion would show the new tempo change but when i played the track back there was no tempo change at all it sounded the same as when i imported it onto track 1. I read the owners manual on how to do this but it is not working what am i not doing??

T2 doesnt timestretch audio by default ... you need to adjust your tempo and then manually modify the clip itself to fit the new bar length ...

... if you select the audio clip and alt-click-drag the right hand triangle top-right of it you can stretch / shrink the audio to fit your new tempo (you can also select from 3 diiferent stretching methods from the drop-down in the properties panel fror that clip) ...

... be warned though that T2s timestretching is NOT in the same league as ... well ... pretty much any other timestretching app you can think of !!!

(hopefully Tnext might improve that)

I never have really experienced this...within bounds. Of course if I load a 120bpm clip and change the tempo to 67, I can't expect it to sound right. I think that goes for any timestretch. I honestly, and perhaps ignorantly, do not understand the big fuss about T's way of handling stretch????

just by way of illustration (sure someone must have already done this but hey ... ) ... no axe to grind but hopefully this will allow you to hear the difference in timestretching quality across different hosts ...

... 3 samples ... a drumloop ... a bassloop ... a short vocal snippet ... all processed using a standard 'granular' timestretch (no beatslicing etc on the drums for example) ...

... 3 hosts ... one is T2 on its 'best' timestretching algorhythm ... one is adobe audition ... and one is something not out yet that uses the elastique timestretching algorhythm (as used by ableton / imageline / NI / bias among others IIRC) ...

... each sample is presented at the original tempo then at half speed and finally at a smaller adjustment of 25% slower (havent done any speeded up examples since IMHO its when slowing stuff down that the different algorhythms reveal their quirks) ...

I don't know the sound of the audition stretch at all, but I'd have to guess at:

1 : audition
2 : tracktion
3 : elastique

In some ways it's easier to tell them apart at subtler intervals though as the T pitch shift starts to exhibit phase artifacts within a few cents.
