why does my music suck?

trying to make a chill/downtempo track, but it doesn't quite work out, any ideas?

The drum groove sounds pedestrian in both 'feel' and sound choice, but the overall idea itself didn't suck, imo. The kick was punchy but thin and the shaker sounds a little high in the mix given that it's only providing a pulse and isn't a showcase part.

Maybe try half-timing the kick and snare? Your bass part will have to pick up the slack, then, though...

yeah, maybe I should cut the the shaker to about half in volume after it kicks in. What does half-timing mean?

(edit: I like the choice of words labelling the rhythm as pedestrian, as I often think of rhytms in the pace of walk, myself)

"Pedestrian", in critical terms, doesn't mean "walking".
It means, "everyday fare", "doesn't stand out".
"Doesn't get anywhere".

A four/four beat where nothing outstanding happens, = a 'pedestrian beat'. It doesn't mean anything good really.
