My last try to make you all understand me correctly:

Take 10 most popular commercial synths made in 2011 and 2012.
Take 10 most popular freeware synths made in 2011 and 2012.
Put your head on a stake and make a bet which group of synths uses more sophisticated algorithms and/or even just more old standard and well known to all tricks to get closer to that pure hardware analog sound.

ok i just misunderstood you then.

still though it seems to me (when i've ever tested demos and so on of popular stuff) the stuff that sells best seems to have the music-dsp.org implementation (naive, super simple, super fast and very well known) a good gui, and a ton of features people always complain they need even when at the expense of other features.

for example in my experience take two synthesizers. one has a mod matrix and five LFOs called "LFO1, ... 5". the other has a "Tremolo", "Cutoff", "Vibrato" and "LFO1, 2", but rather than a matrix it has those three hard-wired in and only allows you to select destinations for the two LFOs.

which one sells better?

i think those sorts of things make the biggest difference.

then i've also left out issues like preset banks, good quality demos, videos, endorsements.

you might be correct in a couple cases but i just don't agree that it applies across the board. not in my experience. (are we talking about sylenth1 and that kind of thing?)

well, maybe. we can't really tell which is the worst because we didn't poll that way and people didn't have the option to sort best to worst.

what we can tell is that at least one guy loves mulab!

mulab doesn't have multiprocessor capability so it's possible.

Glutton for punishment much? Laughing

Garageband is the most efficient host because it's already on the Mac when you buy it. HiHi

Here's my results if anyone's interested. I run a few heavy CPU plug ins like Massive, Absynth etc. and generally have low note counts (2-4 note chords if any) so this test applies very directly to the kind of songwriting I do. Make your own test if you want, this one has worked for me and has proven to be quite accurate when using these DAWs.

On a 2007 Macbook Pro dual 2.4Ghz Santa Rosa chipset, Fireface 800, Novation Remote with Automap. The midi file is single 8th notes for 4 bars looped at 140BPM, the audio buffer is set at 128. NI Massive on the 1991 preset..... and yes before you bullies with nice rigs chime in, this thing is freaking old and can't run many instances! Laughing

Live 8.3 - 4 before crackling <--- Knew this was going to be bad, but surprised at how bad compared.

Reaper latest OSX version just downloaded - 4 before crackling <--- this is truly disappointing, I expected a lot better. I used VSTs in Live and Reaper, but VSTs in Live tend to use like maybe 3% less CPU last time I checked.

Logic 8- 8 instances before overload message. Both Logic and DP would get really close to 80% CPU at around 5 instances but keep being able to stack on more.

Digital Performer 7- 8 instances <-- DP7 won this really though, basically the GUI wasn't usable at 9, but it wasn't crackling.

Personally I think you guys using Reaper aren't being really honest here, either that or Cubase and Sonar are both pigs on the magnitude of Live. Always the possibility that Cuckoos made a crap port to Mac as well? but Reaper OSX being as crap on CPU as Live is a huge disappointment!

Considering Windows in general seems to have a snappier GUI my bet is DP8 for Windows will stomp the crap out of Reaper CPU wise, only time will tell.

That would be great, do you have copies of Cubase and Sonar as well?
I don't have Cubase on my machine, but I would hazard a guess from reports that I would only be able to run maybe 6 instances compared to DP and Logic. That was the results years ago between Live, Logic and Cubase on OSX, roughly Logic at 100 Cubase getting 80% of what Logic could and Live getting 60% of what Logic could.

STUDIO ONE (VERSION 2.0.5)

One instance of GR in NON "hi" mode and ONE instance of recabinet = 20% cpu

REAPER (VERSION 4.2.1)

Same exact thing but WITH "hi" on , 2.7% CPU.

I only have paint as a way to capture a screen and post it to photobucket and that never shows anything visible or I'd just prove it.

DISCLAIMER: I'm very bummed for you. I have no idea why it works so well here and doesn't for you Sad but it's probably the same reason studio one works well for others and doesn't work at all for me.
