Of course Metasynth has been doing exactly this for a while.
It uses the color values to indicate panning. |

Yet here I am right now, using Metasynth to convert images to sound, with frequency on the Y axis and time on the X, with color used to control stereo imaging. |

Lol.
I don't know if anyone remembered but I brought this time-domain image scanning with translational symmetry idea up about 10 years ago, but the discussion got sidetracked. Aciddose you may find these papers interesting "APPLICATION OF RASTER SCANNING METHOD TO IMAGE SONIFICATION, SOUND VISUALIZATION, SOUND ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS" http://www.dafx.ca/proceedings/papers/p_309.pdf "A FRAMEWORK FOR DESIGNING IMAGE SONIFICATION METHODS" https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~woony/publications/Yeo_Berger-IC AD05.pdf Not to discourage anyone, but most attempts will sound like this (not very pleasant) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMQgIzjxqmA |
