i've been wanting to do a little sampler plugin as well but most of the time xhip already does what i want.
the only issue is it would be nice to focus on samples, so the gui could be mostly editing for loop points and that kind of stuff.
also, if it didn't need audio-rate modulation it could save on about 1/2 of the cpu cost. i can get 80 voices in xhip on one core, so i'd be getting about 150~ or so with the pure sampler. ok so that's useless. explains why i haven't bothered yet
i recommend open modplug tracker for sample ripping and editing. i recently got saga to fix the riff export so the loop points work now in the nightly build.

1996!
Man.. that's ages ago.
Anybody know a good FT2 player? I wanna hear my old track again.
EDIT: please disregard the snail mail address posted on that site. I don't live there any more! Nor does the email work.
Cheers!

I use an old, long discontinued player called Sonique for FT2 playback. Couldn't tell you if its flawless, but I haven't noticed any horror errors in my own stuff (I'm looking at you Winamp). Give it a bash if you can find it. 1.90 (released in 2001) is the most recent useful version. I think there were some pointless v2 betas that came to nothing, so don't be thrown off by them. 1.9 throws out error messages re missing DLLs on Vista x86 here, but it seems to run fine regardless.
I stumbled across a page with a modern player specifically designed to play back various MOD files while looking around after being inspired by this thread the other day. Had an absolute ton of positive comments, but I can't find it again.
Will keep hunting...
Oh, and cool track by the way. Those power chords are such a classic tracker sound.
edit: Found it. It's called Flod. Looks like it's actually a collection of Java/Flash libraries rather than an out of the box player. It's located here: http://www.photonstorm.com/flod
Anybody have any recommendations re getting the most accurate FT2 playback on modern machines? Can't say I'd be sad to leave Sonique with all its bugs and idiosyncrasies behind.
edit 2: Tried Renoise again (demo 2.5.1 - this could have been fixed since) and it does some weird stuff with the envelopes in an old track of mine, sounding almost exactly like Winamp in fact. I have a 16th note length looped envelope on the sample's volume in said old track to create gating style effects, and Renoise basically refuses to loop the envelope. You just get the first 16th note burst. Weird thing is, when you mute the offending channel, you actually hear the looping envelope as you're supposed to until the next note hits. Surely you shouldn't hear anything through a muted channel, even less so a correct rendition of the thing you were supposed to hear in the first place!

There's been an early demo on youtube for a while. If you search for plogue you'll probably find it. Certainly something I'll be trying out when it's released.cron wrote:Well, since nobody else is getting excited...davidv@plogue wrote:/me looks innocent.

Ahahahah!! I got it working with VLC player. Man.. what a shitty song!
Seriously what the hell was I thinking? Oh well. It's got some nice Rob Zombiesque stuff going on in the end.
EDIT: actually, VLC seems to screw up some of the pitch bends and sample positions. I don't recall the backwards guitar stuff being that much out of tune before.
Cheers!

Ahh, I have seen this! I was actually quite excited at the time but I'd forgotten all about it. Was thinking it was going to be something more directly tracker related but I'm actually pleased it's not as I'd be going "oh, that's so cool" while never looking at itSendy wrote:There's been an early demo on youtube for a while. Winamp also has a major problem with pitchbends on my FT2 stuff. The bends seem too steep. Didn't sound out of tune at all here. Just delicious tracker cheese all the way!bmanic wrote:EDIT: actually, VLC seems to screw up some of the pitch bends and sample positions. It's actually not out of tune once the pitch bend reaches it's final destination but during the bend itself it goes all weird.. it's like the curve or linearity of the bend is wrong. It's like it bends too slowly at first then too fast.. or then I just remember it wrong and it was that crappy to begin with.
I blame alcohol! That's why the tune was never actually released in the competition either. I wouldn't have had a chance either way. The track sucks. hah! I was too busy drinking some strong liquor that I had smuggled in inside the computer (everybody did) and fragging people playing.. umm.. decent? doom? I don't know what we played as a LAN game in -96. My memory is missing a chunk of info from that time.
Cheers!

I remember XMPlay as being a pretty accurate FT2-module player.
There's also Modplug player if it still exists.

Cubic at least used to be decent, and apparently OpenCP is supposed to work under Windows: http://www.cubic.org/player/bmanic wrote:http://lite.modarchive.org/index.php?re ... uery=32369

But seriously, unless you're trying to play a particularly tricky module, almost any player should work just fine.
edit: oops, seems cubic doesn't run under 64-bit Windows, since Microsoft didn't think it's necessary to support old DOS binaries (which is funny, 'cos Cubic actually knows how to use DirectX, but the binary is DOS compatible).

Exactly the same issue as Winamp has from the sound of it... I recall that Renoise has an option labelled FT2 style pitch bending or similar in there somewhere. I'm guessing from this that FT2 is non-standard in this area and this could be related to the issues many MOD players have reproducing XM pitch bends accurately.bmanic wrote:It's actually not out of tune once the pitch bend reaches it's final destination but during the bend itself it goes all weird.. it's like the curve or linearity of the bend is wrong. Just tried XMPlay with two problematic modules and had no issues at all! My only problem is that it doesn't seem to reproduce the clipping on all of my modules even if AutoAmp is turned off. I know this should be good, but there's character in that truncated mess! Looks like there are some interesting options in there to tweak the engine for more authentic sounds. I shall be playing with those. I think this may have ousted Sonique from my life! Many thanks for the recommendation Limeflavour.
I'll check out Cubic at some point too as I'm still x86 here...
