or because its normally the same bunch of sound designers as the last however many synths and ive heard their wares before ...


would it be better if i said "its quicker for me to dial up what im after than to trawl through the heap of shit provided to find the one sound that might be worth tweaking to get what i want..."?

so youre saying the majority of sounds in synths arent named with clues to their sound?
youre saying its not the same names popping up as sound designers more often than not?
youre saying its not quicker for me to dial something in than to go through a bank of sounds which are made for mass market consumtion when i know that over the years i havent been catered for so dont need to go through it all again with each new synth?
i can completely understand why the sounds chosen are as such, i wouldnt expect the sounds im after to sell synths to the majority of folk, why is this so hard for you to understand? im not saying a sound designer couldnt do it, im saying that a dev probably wouldnt use it if they did as they would know it wouldnt appeal to the masses and would probably put most customers off if there was a synth released with a bank of sounds that would be amed at me.

btw...I know of at least one preset designer who has made at least a few sounds that do not conform to the stereotyping given, of which you associate all sound designers as doing in their sound creations.

I don't tend to use presets, from the idea of I can do it all myself.

I have noticed the sentiment, have synths that have none 'so people can learn synthesis'. From what, "learn synthesis"? Pure trial and error? At school? If one hasn't studied people's expertise, what is one doing? Do you go become an orchestral composer but never looked at anyone's score? C'mon.

I started with the Minimoog. FORTUNATELY there was a sheet that someone put out with indications of famous moog patches, including close-enough-for-rock-n-roll modular moog patches. Emerson, Carlos...

then I did a little bit with the Buchla II at SFCM. Now that was 'theory', applied via trial and error. Everyone kept to themselves in 'Electronic Music Lab' so this was more of the pure 'learning synthesis'. I didn't accomplish shit.

the next big experience learning synthesis was with the Yamaha DX7, Yamaha aka Chowning FM. There were presets! and there was a class by Gary Leuenberger who was part of the development team at one point. I learned a lot.

the idea of people 'learning synthesis', but it's not off of people's shoulders, what was done before, is a bit daft IME.

but you know I use Kore2 and the amount of useless presets to contend with in that thing is a form of hell for me.
