Things to think about -
Do you plan on editing? The JV-2080 had a much better interface. I almost bought the 1080 until I heard teh 2080 was coming out, waited, and pre-ordered it instead. Still have my 2080 in the rack to this day.
4 boards - Are they the boards you'd want or not? The SR-JV boards are harder to come by, and the SRX boards are not compatible with the 1080. I'm sure you can get them on EBay though.
$400 with 4 boards is ok as long as you really want those boards. It's probably worth it for the boards alone, honestly.

The one that's for sale's got Orchestral expansion (not sure about the other 3, will see when I get it).
I won't be editing much though.

The Orch board wasn't bad. I played all the sounds on that card at the store back in 1997, but never bought it. It sounded better than the default internal sounds, from what I remember. Still, it doens't compare to the best sample libraries. STILL, many people prefer it for its dynamics.
It's still better than some of the latest software ROMplers.

maybe, but I'm already running Ableton Live on stage, and JV1080 might be better choice than taxing my comp (AMD 1.x M) with additional samples/synths.vvanrij wrote:I wouldn't buy it, you can get better sounding software 'sample-synths', cheaper too

Don't get the 2080. In order to have more sounds and expansions they cut down on the quality of the da converters. The 1080 simply sounds better for that fact. When i do session work at other studios i always bring my 1080 and my computer. It's still a great machine.
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

This is sort of true and sort of false....here's the deal on the difference in D/A converters between the 1080 and 2080:Kim Olesen wrote:Don't get the 2080. • TRUE - They are different indeed and sound quite different from each other.
• FALSE - However, this was not done for cost reasons. In fact, Roland upgraded the 2080s converters with newer and more expensive ones than the 1080s converters. But like many things, newer is not necessarily better.
So which one is actually "better" sounding?
In terms of being a faithful representation of the factory sounds, probably the 1080 - because when I was at Roland, I tweaked every one of those thousands of factory and expansion board sounds to sound just right on a 1080...(not a 2080, which is much darker sounding.)
So I agree with you that the 1080 represents the "classic JV" sound best, but the reasons for the difference in 2080 sound weren't because Roland was trying to save money on cheaper converters....but that they were messing around with something that already had a good vibe to it, and that usually doesn't improve things.
"If it 'aint broke, don't fix it" I always say...

Since you're not going to be doing a lot of editing, I wouldn't recommend it. The JV/XPs shine when you sit down with it for a week and come up with a bank of your own stuff, otherwise it sounds... well... egh.
Roland really needs to fire its preset guys.

When I used my JV1080 I used to do whole midi sysex dumps (remember them
)
This was to and from my Pro 24 (Cubase before it was Cubase
)
JV was particularly good at receiving sequencer setup sysex info.
I thought this was great at the time, as send/recall and sysex dumps were new and not that reliable.
I also think setups could be saved in the JV's memory or on a card (anyone help me on this?)
So maybe this is encouraging news for playing JV with Live on stage
...
Eric ... did you do the cards too?
