I bought this up quite a while back on this forum.

But it looks like only xoxos really got into
it.

WE NEED A FOLEY VST SYNTH DEVELOPER CHALLENGE!

THEN WE NEED A FOLEY PLUGINS SECTION IN THE
PLUGIN SEARCHES!

The usual pithy answer to questions about Foley
plugins is get a mic and record some wild sounds!
As said by the last time it was posted about this.
Then cut/mix paste the audio into your project.Or get a
Foley Artist to fake the sound.

Which is OK if you have a GREAT microphone, have
a Great Mixer/recorder, know how to mix, have the time
to hunt the perfect sound,can afford to employ a Foley
artist.Also not everyone in the WORLD Lives in California,
lets not forget the poorer global citizens that use
Free VST plugins could never AFFORD their physical
counterparts.

With Xoxos Vst I wanted a bullet bang sound,
I pressed the key and got it!Not every one reading
this can afford it, there is a HUGE Gaping hole.
Foley/Sound Fx/Video atmospherics are used everyday
in the audio visual world.

Its a bit weird that there hasn't been that uptake.
now that everyone is Audio Visual these days with youtube
pushing people who were not artistically inclined to
produce audio visual material.Then there's the technology
-Camera phones,Video Cameras,etc....

So i made a list of the free ones so far...

THE FOLEY LIST- FREE CINEMATIC OR VIDEO SOUND FX VST PLUGINS

HOW TO USE THEM:-

Alot of MUSIC software allows you to play VIDEO
while you play music.

So you get your finished EDITED footage
[usually as compressed quicktime or AVI].
Import into your Music Package .Then open up a vst synth
and play along on your midi keyboard or pc keyboard.
for example tapping once for a gun crack with
a gun fx vst as the actor fires a gun on your video.

Once finished.Export the wav file out.
Open your video editing package.
Import the wav file and put on a seperate
track from dialogue audio.Music/ background chat
and others are on seperate tracks.

Mix appropriately with all other audio elements.

This is hardcore wind.Blizzard/storm wind!
Scary wind.holding down all keys makes
it a massive ,storm like, occassion.
Try Different presets-diffent winds.

[WIND by XOXOS]-

Wind of all kind, subtle wind on the dry plains to
frightening wind. Clever stuff here, you can change
it from a breeze to full on blast by amount of keys
you hold down.Presets are excellent.From the Hollow
preset which gives wind in a cave to treetops preset
[hold down multiple keys]which gives wind blowing
through trees. This can be used in anything!

[RAIN BY XOXOS]-

synth For RAIN, underwater, dripping sinks and er Fire!
The sort of noise aspect of rain can be made
to sound like fire apparently! Rain intensity and
coverage depends on how many keys you press. BUT! This Rain sounds
of the very tropical moonsoon lite white noise variety.
That's not to say it isn't convincing it is very realistic.
It's just Not really the atmospheric pavement tapping
constant digging at your soul rain we have in London over here.
The fire presets -campfire and others are excellent.
So is the dripping and the bubble pop sound preset.

[THUNDER BY XOXOS]-

Thunder sounds right? Er... Do you remember those weird eighties
sword and fantasy videos like Beastmaster etc. There would be a scene
where they head to the sorcerors castle and dark clouds would be overhead
with weird purple lightening/magic those metallicay magical thunder
sounds are JUST LIKE THIS. This Synth should be called the
FANTASY FILM FX FOLEY SYNTH(F4-S!).I still love it though.

I have not found a realistic dedicated thunder synth.

[BTS NOISE FACTORY]-

STORMY SEAS PRESET! Very cool Stormy seas preset setting.
Distant waves and rain. Also has excellent Rain and 80s
sci fi Laser gun sounds.

FOLEY TYPE:-BABBLE...

BABBLE is the indistinct ALMOST INAUDIBLE
CHATTER you hear in the background of most
movie/video scenes usually in contrast
to the pin drop sharp audible dialogue.

A Classic example is resturant background chat
while 2 people dine and talk.Or urban street
noise scape,or the crickets insect symphony
in a nightime swamp

Babble vsts :-

FIELD-

Best example of a babble plugin.
Urban street sound scape.Sample based.
It just spurts various sections of different
street noise, you use it's faders
to make some noises more distinct[louder]
then others.Use it's gain to completely
cut off/increase all the sound ,and it's
Eq to place it in the mix.

We need various more plugins like this
as well as the foley synths with their
complete control of sound.

I'm still fuzzy on why anybody would use a synthesizer in place of real recordings when adding foley to their movie.

i'd use a big sampler like kontakt and some real sound(sound ideas, hollywood edge) loaded (would be really cool tho if sound ideas for example offered kontakt files on their sites for owners of the wav/aiff libraries as the naming and tree listing would be the same, just tell kontakt the root folder and all samples would load(i say that just cause i'm too lazy to map them and usually just drag them in logic and place them where i want it, big advantage for longer amiant sounds as they always play, no need to go back before the note on

As someone who is actively creating television shows and music scoring, I use foley sounds quite a bit when needed.

The fact is, no decent video editing package allows for virtual instruments, which sucks, but it's the truth. They allow for vst effects, but not instruments, so even if a foley vsti was created, you could not use it inline with your native editing package.

That said, I have EVERY INTENTION of creating a Foley type vsti.

Right now, you can check out www.hardcoreharmonics.com

PRIZM is perfect for Atmospheric sounds and effects. It was created with movie and television production in mind.

We are also creating DRILLz - which is great for machinery sounds and SCRAPtopia, which will be perfect for of-the-wall percussion sounds - great for pots banging, commercial or industrial scenes, etc.

Feel free to let us know what other sounds you SPECIFICALLY want in a foley vsti and we will make it happen. Just remember, we cannot create one instrument with every sound you could ever want. That sucker would be 100 terabytes in size with all that could possibly be needed. Just include the sounds that are normally used in your line of work.

The main problem with creating foley vsti's is that there are too few people who would buy them. Musicians outnumber production companies 10,000 to 1 (and that number is probably way too low). The odds are excellent that nearly no one would buy it.

I salute the OP for the thoroughness, and karmacomposer for his efforts in the field, here.

As for platform compatibility: windows-only, I know that xoxos is, and that PRIZM's engine is.

Marketing/demographic note: on the 'other' platform, Logic Studio includes Soundtrack Pro 3, which is made to bridge to Final Cut Pro, for sure an editing suite for picture, and the package includes a goodly amt. of foley content. Non-California affordability too, I think. Maybe.

thanks for the heads-on izotope and mda (which makes a few AU versions apparently)
