  • DiHalt Demoscene competitions
  • Indaba - Has a mix of popular and indie artists with various contests like remixing and song writing. Some people from OSC have had success here.
  • KVR Mix Challenge (see stickies) - Who can mix a song the best (Without adding extra recordings /musical additions)? Each person starts out with the same stems.
  • Music Cafe (KVR, see stickies) - A thematic monthly competition. Use recording, real instruments, synths and samples.
  • RemixComps - An aggregator for remix contests from a variety of artists and genres (mostly EDM) - indie and popular.
  • Soundevotion (SDCOMPO) Competition - Even longer running than the OSC, the SDCOMPO is even more niche in that you must use a tracker, and set of specific effects. Great community.

This is great! OB-Xd is such a fantastic synth!
I'll release a planned free bank for it in a couple of weeks. Obviously, I'd like these presets not to be used for the competition.
I won't have time to participate myself but good luck to all participants.

Okay, I'm in. And I'm going to spend all month on this track just to prove a point. I am starting tonight and not finishing until 11/30/2016. I will spend at least 4 hours per day on it. That should translate to well over 100 hours.

Dollars to donuts I don't end up placing any better than I normally do for all you "well, if you only put in 2 hours, you're going to finish at the bottom" folks.

This will prove once and for all what a load of BS that is.

And with that, this is my only rant and post for the month until my track is submitted on 11/30.

Let's finally put this matter to rest once and for all.

Stephen, spend 1 week on sound design. I mean good sounds. Don't even worry about making a song. Take a kick sample and other percussion and other sounds you want to hear, and tweak the hell out of the synth to get them as close as possible. Then spend 1 week on a song, and design more sounds for it. Then scrap it. Then spend the 3rd week on a song and design more sounds for it then scrap it. Then spend the last week actually making a song from the sounds you've accumulated, and add a few more where you need to with your new knowledge of the synth. If you put 100 hours in like that, it should show and you would probably finish top 5.

Well, I can't load the plugin in Zynewave Podium x64. Keep getting an error message. Loads fine in Renoise though.

Well, the envelopes on this thing suck for making kicks. I don't know enough about the internals of synths to know why that is but these are very wishy washy envelopes. There is no consistency from one trigger to the next.

And because I've never wracked my brain trying to make kick drums for synths where making kick drums isn't easy, I have no idea where to begin. It'll take me 100 hours just to do this.

So there is a good chance this track isn't getting done unless I do a new age atmospheric piece and if I do that we all know where it's going to end up because unless you have a kick drum in your track you're not finishing high up.

I should probably just cut my losses now and wait until a synth comes out with decent envelopes.

That's just it, you don't have to know the internals of synths. Just tweak the hell out of the thing until you get comparable sounds to things you already know you like and would want to use. If you cant, then go find some youtube tutorials. Kicks are easy-ish. I got decent kicks out OBXD last time around, I think. Don't have this sort of attitude. Just go get sounds. Good sounds. This is the most important thing at first. Otherwise you can't showcase you're musical masterpiece.

I don't think it's the envelopes. I mean they're not great but they're decent. I think it's the oscillators. They don't go back to the beginning of the wave with each trigger. I made a short 8th note kick pattern and you can hear each hit is slightly different in timber. If I recorded this and looked at the wave I'd probably see what the variations are.

Okay, off to YouTube to see what I can find because all my usual tricks aren't good enough for me.

I get compliments on my kick drums sometimes.

I own all kinds of kick drum samples from all sorts of really talented sound designers. I bought a Tempest drum synth a couple of years ago, and quickly realized that there was a whole lot more to making nice drum samples than synthesis. Those things from Wave Alchemy, Sample Magic and Goldbaby were processed to hell and back.

Open an EQ, Distortion, a compressor and/or limiter on the kick channel. Don't be afraid to EQ the crap out of it. When mixing engineers say you should never boost, only cut......those instructions don't apply to us electronic guys making our own sounds. Go crazy, push things hard, and then slam that kick with a limiter, maybe 2!!!!

While you're synthesizing your kick sound, have all of those plugins open, and tweaking away to get the right oomph.

Sometimes a layering is necessary. A nice thud is no problem, but getting a mid range crack or smack is not so easy on one patch. For this recipe, open two instances of the synth, bus the two channels together, and do the same with the EQ, distortion, compressor/limiter deal.

Even more advanced you can send your kick channel into two different compressor buses, then use one compressor to accentuate snap, and the other to accentuate the boom.

Good luck. Remember....it's just a kick. Rarely makes or breaks a track. As long as the music is good, don't sweat it too much.
