Hi KVR,

My beloved drum sampler/sequencer Geist does polyrhythms, but not the way I want it to work. For example: When I work with 1/16 length patterns in the 4/4 measure and I program a 14 step pattern, the 14 step pattern loops… after the 14th step, it starts again at the 15th step. What I am searching for is a step sequencer that stretches the whole area, like the image below, a 12 step pattern (1 bar with 1/8 triplets in Cubase) that stretches over the whole bar. I want a sequencer where I can program patterns with 5, 7, 9, 10 etc steps this way. Anyone?

I will make it in 32 bit if you want me to.
I have built it, just need to make it have the unusual bar lengths.
It's here->
www.phonicsaudio.com
___and it's called DreamSequence
I wonder what I want in here
-my site is gone and music a mess

That's a really nice offer nix808! Unfortunately Dream Sequence doesn't work in my 64bit DAW :(

You want to divide a bar evenly by any number of steps? That's a Euclidean rhythm. There is a cool paper called The Euclidean Algorithm by Toussaint.
Doesn't Cubase let you divide a bar in any number of steps, and stack those sequences? (I can do it in MuLab).
There are software sequencers that do Euclidean rhythms:

If you have Reaktor 5 or higher, go to the user database and download Vss 2.5. Most complex and versatile sequencer I've ever seen. It can do anything you want it to. Just be prepared for a whopper of a learning curve.

Here's the link. It's actually up to version 2.8

Speedrum 2 is a hidden gem. 8)

Here's Michael Lanchaster's YouTube channel. He has a number of tutorials on Vss up there.

Most of my reaktor sequencers will do this
Both polyrhythmic and Euclidean variants
Some of them will run different clock speeds for each sequencer track too

I realise the OP may not have reaktor
But it is fantastic for sequencing
The other alternative is five12 numerology

Yeah, for sequencing I don't think anything beats some of the stuff in Reaktor. Vss just happens to be my personal favorite because of the sheer amount of control. Does take a while to wrap your head around it though.

Thanx guys for your quick answers!

As far as I know Cubase has dotted and triplet scales in a bar

Don't have Reaktor, maybe in the future. A step sequencer not thàt complex has the advantage.

You are able to set the number of steps in the way the 12 step pattern shown in the picture of my first post? (Euclidean?)

A midi pattern drag 'n drop to my DAW would also be a nice feature :)

Now I am going to study further on your answers

Another way that you may enjoy more is to just play each rhythm part, adding each instrument track one at a time, from simple to more complex. You can count (and turn off quantize in the drum editor to tweak it), or use a metronome and calculator. I prefer to play in order to experiment (e.g. if you divide your bar into 16, and place 5 hits somewhere in that 16, you have 4,367 possible rhythms).
