Some "aggressive" protection and not being able to activate old plugins, made me think of listing companies that use offline protection.

The main reason is there is no guarantee that the promises will be fulfilled once the product discontinued or the company goes banana.

I'm just trying to list companies/developers of instruments and synths. I believe they also deserve a special place and attention because of their friendly/brave choice to have offline activation for their software :)

The main requirement is to be able to install the product offline and authorise your license offline.

So the criteria is when you get the installation file and serial/keyfile you can backup those and use them later offline, can you do that?

For example, I downloaded the installation file of Bazille synth from u-he website or installed the demo from a magazine DVD or whatsoever way. The installation didn't need online in my computer. Then I bought a license from my phone and then got email with my serial number from u-he. I don't need online connection, just wrote the serial number into the demo installed and viola!

Another example, Image Line case, I bought the software and logged into my account and then downloaded the keyfile.

So, let's start :

Thank you everyone for your valuable info :D

Also I would appreciate it if you can correct me when I'm wrong or when there are missing info or in any case that makes the list entry not valid :)

To help with a machine migration a while ago I made a list of what uses what.

No CP or watermark
Audio Damage (old stuff needs a serial but the new stuff doesn't)
DiscoDSP (has involved a licence file at times but back to watermark/personalised installer now - I think)
GlitchMachines
Nusofting

Serial
Cwitec (for the paid version)
Dmitry Sches - Diversion, not Thorn (and Diversion might go to C/R with PA)
Fabfilter
GGAudio
KV331
Loomer
SPC
Sugar Bytes
u-he
Xfer

Keyfile
Admiral Quality
Madrona Labs
Plogue
Sonic Academy
Tone2

Some plugins use a cross between a licence file and C/R, such as D16: their licence files have an embedded expiry date so you have to generate a new one at the website. I haven't included them, though I might have included some that use hidden C/R by mistake.

I nearly bunged in DMG, Valhalla and Airwindows then realised it was just instruments.

EDIT: D'oh I was looking at old files. It's a keyfile on Madrona after all.

Waldorf moved to use only serials for their plugins a few years ago.

For older eLicenser licenses you can still convert eLicenser activtion codes to a serial in your Waldorf account or contact Waldorf support for receiving a serial.

The NI last action and some other "aggressive" protection made me think of listing companies that use offline protection.
Just wondering, but... what if a company goes bust, and you're not able to log into your account anymore, and can't download the installers? Literally every company has such a system these days.

Also, Image-Line is a very bad example... probably the most cracked, and widely warezed audio software out there.

Well, if you didn't back up the installers, you're screwed.

But if you didn't back up the installers...why didn't you?

You can get the installer from anyone! It is not prohibited to get the installer, and you (or I), we supposed to save the serial somewhere, right, or just see your emails and your documents maybe?!

Why Image-Line is a very bad example?! It is a very good and respectable company IMO. I have Harmor and FL Studio Producer, and I had installed/uninstalled them several times on several computers. No problem! Just locate the keyfile and it is registered :)

No. You can't just go around, and distribute the installers. Unless the EULA clearly states that you can. Most don't allow it.

If I learned something here then that people don't back up the installers. ;)

I do it, but, most of the stuff on my external HD is pretty old, because, it's quite cumbersome to keep it up to date. I agree that you should backup your installers, but, is it that practicable?

I dump every installer onto a NAS which is then backed up to a second USB drive. Every once in a while I prune the folders on the NAS. So, yeah, it's practical.

Unless you're just collecting these things and collecting practically everything, the overhead of doing that vs the use you get out of these instruments is minimal.

Also, it's a specious point about sharing installers. In the real world, people do send each other (non-watermarked) installers because they're not arseholes. If the company's gone bust, their EULA isn't going to matter much.

Top whataboutery though, sir, I commend you.

Oh come on now! So if you give another member an installer of company disappeared (that you can't get anywhere), you are violating the EULA but if NI violate its own EULA, it is ok! I smell some hypocrisy ;)

Also, give me an example of users have a big problem with company used serial/key file and disappeared! Even VAZ Modular has no problem. I have it and I and I have a backup of the installer and serial. Although I don't use it because it is only 32bit.
