I make a lot of old school boom bap style hip-hop and am looking for a good upright jazz bass plugin in the range above. A few of the things I came across were Straight Ahead Bass and Orange Tree Samples CoreBass Pear. I know Kontakt has one in the Factory Library but I couldn't seem to tone down the percussive sounds from it. It just seemed over the top. Any suggestions in that price range?

AIR XPand!2 rompler has a few "Double bass" patches among its hundreds of instruments. One of those ought to suit your needs. The VSTi is only $15 USD:

UJAM Mellow 2 sounds really good and is fun to play when in Instrument Mode. It also has pre-made bass lines for different genres (in Player Mode) that can be then dragged to MIDI.

OTS CorePear Bass is nice too (I have both) but prefer Mellow as it sounds better and is more playable. It does have a demo so you can check it out. They have sales every now and then. You just missed one.

I really like the Orange Tree CoreBass Pear, it sounds very realistic, I usually use it in acoustic (mic only) mode for jazzy stuff, downtempo, lo-fi hip-hop, and classic drum n' bass. It's got slaps and other noises a player would make and realistic slides. I play the notes in but do a lot of programming to make it better. It requires Kontakt full version but is otherwise priced very well. You can wait for the Orange Tree group buy which usually happens in the summer if you're low on cash.

Thank you! A lot of the styles you mentioned overlap a lot of what I aim for. Are you able to control the slap and percussive noise? I like how it makes it seem more realistic but would like to dial it back if I could. I played around with the upright bass patch in the Kontakt factory library but I could never find anywhere to control that sound. It sounded fine to me if I could just tweak that one aspect. A lot of the music I make has revolved around sampling but I want to play more of my own ideas in but still have that convincing realistic sound.

I've heard and read really good things about both. Honestly I'd probably just go with Trilian if it wasn't for the price.

There are two in the Kontakt Factory Library and there is a Noise knob that broadly controls the level of release noises. The Jazz Bass has 4 velocity levels so make sure you are not slamming it at max velocity which inherently has noise as the player smacks the strings. Try that and see if you are satisfied enough. The main issue for me with the factory library instruments is lack of slides but if your music doesn't require it maybe it's sufficient.

The CoreBass has finer controls for noise, you can read it in the user guide on the product page. There are independent levels for release noise, legato noises, and fret slides. Like I said before, also make use of the velocity levels; in addition to the round robin this is an excellent way to get more realistic variation. There are also individual tap/slap samples way at the bottom of the keys for extra coloration.

Another thing that helps in CoreBass is the configurable "pre-roll", this is the sound that happens before the main transient. You will want to adjust when the MIDI notes hit to compensate. You'll want to do it by ear depending on how tight or relaxed you want the playing to be.
