hi guys, im checking out different recording options and i want to check if it sounds kinda authetic using a tape vst, i got SATIN but i dont know yet if it emulates a sounds of these specific devices truly, does anyone have experiences with real ones?
and what vsts are maybe available emulating the above mentioned one?+

(does anyone know what settings you need to use to get the TEAC sound or how i can check the hardware infos to know what i need to set in SATIN?)

thanks

Ik multimedia has a portastudio emulation. (There are probably others) Or you could use chowtape - satin is probably too hi-fi for that..?

Don't forget to add lots of noise and flutter.

Myself I'd prefer to keep as far away from the "portastudio" sound, if that's even a thing.

If I wanted to add ungodly hiss and noise to my tracks, I'd just get out my 424mk2. Take it from folks that used them regularly (and still have them), sometimes nostalgia should stay just that.

Fuse covers the Tascam 688, which is only $15 at Plugin Boutique currently.

Oh thank god someone popped in to ensure we're aware of their aesthetic superiority.

thx a lot guys, i tested some and i think i might have misunderstood some plugins :D

TCS-68 Cassette Tape Channel
Seems nice but somehow it didnt give me much extra sauce i expected, i mostly want to beef/juice percussions like snare and/or drum busses. not sure with this one yet if kinda is subtle and i dunno if it brings me more than TB Reelbus and Satin

Portatron
ok this one seems killer, overkill for me, i wasnt clear, but this one emulates the whole recording process as well, too much for my needs, i just want a nice tapey glue/punch sound.
i read that a lot of rappers/producers recorded on these machines and this gave the percussions some nice punchy/crunchy flair.

i dont want the Hiss, and flutter but such crunchy layered snares :D

IK Multimedia
im staying away of this crap service. but thx.

I would think Wavesfactory Cassette should get you the sound you're looking for. It has some nuanced settings so you can dial it in to be just right... But start with the default settings and see if that gets you there.

I've been doing some 4 track process experiments where I limit my track count and bounce down (tape emulation fx compounding with multiple bounces) -- I think it definitely has an authentic vibe.

You already said you were avoiding IK, which is probably good because it has a ridiculous amount of latency.

Wavesfactory Cassette can run at zero latency, and then you can turn on oversampling and it's still minimal.

Here's a free cassette plugin from Caelum Audio, which BPB liked, if you're just looking for a lo-fi sound. They also do a Pro version if you like it.

SketchCassette II from Aberrant DSP maybe. https://aberrantdsp.com/plugins/sketchcassette/
I also use and like WowControl from Ghz...

SketchCassette II is a classic, totally capable of what OP is going for. It also has a type of compression that was common on old tape decks, though probably not specific to the Tascam.

A note about Wavesfactory Cassette -- from the manual:
"Cassette has been carefully modelled after exhaustive analysis of several tape types (I, II, III and IV)
and cassette recorders/players: Tascam 414 (Pro) and Omega Reporter-20 (Micro). We’ve included a
third deck named “Home” which is a combination of the Pro and Micro decks."
So that's not the 424 but... it's close!

IK Multimedia is, by far, the best sounding one.
