how did uziq do the arp on the uziq theme?

ive tried to do it on ableton but the arp is ueless.

30 years ago, when I released my first µ-Ziq album, “Tango N’Vectif”, I listed my equipment on the back cover. I used an Atari 1040ST running Cubeat sequencer, which controlled the following via MIDI: Yamaha DX11 multitimbral synth, Roland D-50 (I’d replaced my Korg with this) and the Alesis HR-16 drum machine. They went into a Fostex 280 mixer/4-track recorder with Multiverb LTX reverb and a Boss Digital delay pedal.

Looking at that setup, I'd guess he just painted in the notes in Cubeat and fed the D50 from that (possibly the Korg Poly-800 he had before). Sometimes, if you need to match a precise arp pattern, you just need to do the same. It sounds like it's basically two hands of minor chord with another root at the top on a triplet grid.

OTOH, try BlueArp.

ok, so what would i program into the bluarp? ive managed to get it working. are there any presets that come close? im feeding it a single note to begin with

The first two chords are minor, but the 3rd and the 4th chords are major.

No need to use BlueArp. You can use Ableton Live Arpeggiator, Style = UpDown, Rate = 1/24.
And if you really need to play the whole sequence using only single note at a time, then you could use two Ableton Live Chord devices, one for the minor chord notes (+3, +7, +12, +15, +19, +24) and another for the major chord notes (+4, +7, +12, +16, +19, +24). Then put those on separate chains in MIDI Effects Rack feeding the Arpeggiator, and use Key zones to select minor Chord chain for the first two chords and major Chord chain for the 3rd and 4th chords (key zone split at D3).

The arp note sequence seems to be correct.

I don't know if you tried to get the synth sound and effects similar to the original track.

The synth sound is based on pure sine wave, containing only the fundamental frequency. Your sound countains also the 4th harmonic, which makes the sound a bit like an organ. You could use pure sine to get closer to the original.

You could also adjust amp envelope to reduce clicks. There is a bit of clicking also in the original, but its smoother than your example.

The original synth sound seems to have random pan applied to each note.

You have used reverb in you example, but it sounds like the delay effect is missing. The uziq track has 1/4 note delay with eq/filter to cut the delay from low/mid notes. The delay is clear only on highest notes. This is nice effect because it allows to use long feedback without making the whole arp sequence muddy.

There is also some kind of low level distortion in the original sound. It's panned left.

sweet, thanks for the advice. im quite happy with knowing just the arp. although i might try what youve suggested soon.
