Stop textures from disappearing...

When I have textures I like, Soundclouds re-encoding messes them up. Also cheap speakers don't pick them up. Or even one of my car stereos..

Example the standalone bass at around :40 sounds great even as MP3 on my computer, but flat once uploaded to soundcloud.

Is there a simple way to make these textures more exaggerated so they don't disappear, or do I just need to trial and error making them more exaggerated until I get a feel for how they translate everywhere?

If some bass line does not come through the standard trick is to make unison something an octave up also.
- I don't think raising level is a good idea

Waves MaxxBass make such harmonics for you without extra recording and something to try.

As usuall look for good campaigns and this is part of Gold Bundle for one.

Thanks lfm. I have MaxxBass just never really used it. Will give it a try.

There are several options. The simplest is to slightly emphasize the bass harmonics at
around 1-2 kHz. For example, with an equalizer, preferably a dynamic one.

A bit of waveshaping and some EQ is a good way you bring out the "highs" in a bass sound. I check mixes through "tiny speaker" IRs when I need them to translate all over the place. Does the SoundCloud link sound crappy in on the exact same system that you monitor the mix on? If so it's probably a spectral thresholding issue. EQ in the mid and high frequencies can rebalance the spectrum.

Thanks I've been playing around with this.

The same system. I'll play around with EQ thanks! I have ToneBoosters EQ4 Pro should I use that and just EQ the sustain portion of the sound? Or EQ everything?

EQ everything unless you have a big issue when using normal eq. You need to find the harmonics that bring the bits of the spectrum that you need forward. Maybe cut some superfluous bass. Try adding a bit of distortion with a waveshaper to generate some higher harmonics that accentuate your sound.

It's a mixing mistake (balance).
Use Sonobus free app on smartphone + plugin in your DAW to fix the levels of your instruments.
I can clearly hear all the layers in your track when I am listening to it on my Adam S3H mid fields monitors.
But on small speakers or bad systems it's just drowned. Which is totally ok.

Recap:
1) Fix your mix' balance
2) Compare with the top tracks. You will find out that you mids and highs can be much prominent. ATM track sounds dull IN COMPARISON with the top hits.

Thanks for that. I have metric A/B guess it's time to use it.

Stay safe!
