I spoke w/the Acme head dev a few times; the free versions are working demos for cheap commercial versions later on. Think of it as free advertising.

I think what it comes down to is this. When you make something for free, you have one job. Make that thing. When you make something for commercial sales, you now have many jobs. Making the thing, selling the thing, advertising and marketing the thing, supporting the thing. Maybe you need help. Now you have an hr job.. you farm that out... now you are running a company... wait, I just wanted to make a thing! So there it is. That's why I'm pretty content finding companies to work for so someone else who likes that type of work can do it and leave me to what I do. Ever wonder why so many cool synth makers in the 70s never made it into the 80s? They were crappy business people. The trend still goes on today. A developer like Urs Heckman is a rare thing. He seems to be able to run a little one man show really well. Other devs seem to run their business like a table at a flea market and the worst of them seem to think that their customers are only customers because they haven't figured out a way to pirate their software.

Anyway, when I first started down the road of computer based effects and instruments I was mesmerized by the vast array of freeware. Why would anyone buy anything!? Slowly though, I came to see that most freeware isn't really worth the time it takes to download and install it. I'm not saying the Acme Bar stuff is bad, but it didn't impress me enough to continue using them. If I were broke though, I'm sure I'd probably be less picky. Anyway, like anything else, the rule of thumb is "you get what you pay for" but that's only true some of the time with software. Plugs like Mobius (audio looper) are actually way better than anything available commercially. The LePou plugs are as good as many commercial ones.

Basically, if you like it then you win. Sometimes freeware is the answer, other times you have to dig into that wallet to find something that satisfies.

Easy to make in Synthedit or Synthmaker. Otherwise, they're just generous.

zerocrossing is right on, as long as I'm concern. You know, I already have a full time job, and a pretty good one. I got into amp sim vst as a hobby. And as zerocrossing said, going commercial means marketing, support, protection, etc. I just don't want to get into that stuff right now. Just not enough time to invest.

I do it for a few reasons, 1) It allows me to test and see what people are really interested in. Second, Advertising, Third, I truly enjoy giving people tools to make music.

I do want to sell plugs one day, but I don't have any illusions of becoming well off doing that. I mean our full suite will sell for 25 dollars, which I believe is around 75 dollars cheaper than the closest competitor...Thats with 25 heads...
