Cubase 5 Public Service Announcement (midi timing tip)

This quick tip should save a lot of you some late night hair pulling.
Back in the SX2 days, there was a popular MIDI timing problem that was easily fixed. Turns out that I've had to do this for every Cubase update since.
Well, I just loaded C5 a couple of days ago, and guess what? Same problem. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my MIDI input timing (recording) was constantly screwing up. This is NOT a latency issue (though, obviously, latency can be responsible for a host of timing problems as well.) Then, of course, I remembered that I have had this same problem with each prior upgrade. I found the answer somewhere on the Steinberg website FAQ page a number of years ago and posted to the CUBASE.COM forum for others. Fortunately, I was able to find my original post with the solution. I don't know WHY it works, but it does. Here it is:
Browse to the Cubase 5 application folder (usually C:/programs/steinberg/...) and locate the folder "MIDI Port Enabler"
-Open this folder
-Pick the file "ignoreportfilter" and move it into the application folder (one directory up)
-Start Cubase 5
This works like a charm for me. Good luck.
Cheers

Actually, I used my suggested tip for SX2, SX3, C4 and now C5.hibidy wrote:thanks for the tip.
For "4" I had to "devices"/device setup/midiport setup/ and at the bottom check the "use system time stamp for windows midi inputs" box.
I have not tried the timestamp fix, though I haven't needed to.

Not to intrude or anything, just that I remember having the timing problem, having to do what I did and it workedBERFAB wrote:Actually, I used my suggested tip for SX2, SX3, C4 and now C5.hibidy wrote:thanks for the tip.

I had that problem through all the SX's. I don't have it in C4 but I have another problem. Midi start times are perfect when I'm playing, but the length of the notes are short by just a small amount. I wonder if there's some kind of fix for that. It's not a terrible problem as I can just lengthen every note by a tiny amount in 1 go, and maybe set up something that will do it automatically is possible too, but it's a strange set of problems to be having for "mighty" Cubase.

Try checking your quantize settings . Many of them are global , not per proyect :TeeLangSun wrote:I had that problem through all the SX's. I don't have it in C4 but I have another problem. " If Auto Quantize is activated on the Transport panel (the
"Auto Q" button), the notes you record are automatically
quantized according to the current Quantize settings. For
more information about quantizing, see "The Quantizing
functions" on page 325. "
