it really is the same exact sound as the Deadmau5 8ths notes timed trance synth. Its very simple really, you just need layered Saws, with one being -1 octave. Then play 5ths chords. The rest is really about playing with the filter envelope. You want a fast decay and almost no sustain, but some release to give it that sound. then, play with the Keyboard tracking and Filter Velocity to make it as trancy or in your case, house/techno-ish as you wish. A huge stereo reverb and filter fx and you are basically there.
right now, Sylenth1 would be my goto synth for this sound. Predator does a good job too

I think you mean 5ths, not 8ths.zion7 wrote:8ths

Ah yes, sorry about that. I think what threw me off was you putting an 's' after 8th.

Lots of those are 8ths, lots are dotted 8ths. It varies. In this context, it's the regular 8th notes throughout the whole dang thing that people initially were just eating up.
But yeah, what zion7 said.

Thanks so much for your help guys. I'm pretty new to making music so it's taken a bit of reading to work out that a 5th chord is just two notes, the root note and the fifth note, and that an 8th is the length of the note, and is equal to a 'step' in FL, or 1/4 of a beat, right?
What's the difference between an 8th and a dotted 8th?
Playing with Sylenth1 has been a great help in recreating this type of sound. Preset 028 (called 'Chicago') is already quite close and a good place to start. I am now just trying to get that 'woody' sound but presume this is done by playing with the cutoff and the decay.

No, a 1/4 of a beat is a quarter (or sixteenth) note-nightshade- wrote:Thanks so much for your help guys. An 8th note is a half note (where your open hi hat would go in between a kick & snare)
A dotted note adds half as much again to the note's duration. So a dotted 8th note is equal to an eighth note + sixteenth note, or in terms of duration, 3/4 of a beat.
Yep, set your Envelopes like this:-nightshade- wrote:I am now just trying to get that 'woody' sound but presume this is done by playing with the cutoff and the decay.
AMP
A = 0
D = 30%
S = 0%
R = Anywhere from 0 to 50 depending on how you want the sound to open up)
FILTER
A = 0%
D = 20%
S = 0%
R = 50%
Then bring your cutoff right down and adjust your Filter Env Amount down to about 75%
Use unison to get a thicker sound and add some reverb & delay for atmosphere.
EQ, Compress, and then you should be on your way.
Hope that helps
